South Florida Routs New Orleans in Women’s Basketball Matchup
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The South Florida Bulls delivered a dominant performance on both ends of the floor, cruising to a 90-58 victory over the winless New Orleans Privateers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Sun Dome.
The game was never in doubt as the Bulls established control early and never relented, improving their record to 5-3 while the Privateers fell to 0-7.
South Florida’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 90 points on just 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 118.6. The Bulls shot 50.8 percent from the floor, connecting on 32 of 63 attempts, and capitalized at the free-throw line, making 20 of 25. Their dominance inside was evident, outscoring New Orleans 44-26 in the paint and securing 15 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
Conversely, New Orleans struggled profoundly to generate offense. The Privateers managed only 58 points from 81 possessions, an offensive rating of 72.0. They shot a frigid 30.3 percent from the field, making 20 of 66 shots, and connected on just 7 of 27 from three-point range. Ball movement was also a significant issue, as the team finished with only four total assists.
Raina Tomasicka led a balanced and potent South Florida attack, pouring in a game-high 21 points in just 21 minutes on the floor. She was instrumental in building the Bulls’ lead with timely shooting. Fatou Diakite was a force in the paint, narrowly missing a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds, while also contributing two blocks. Katie Davidson provided a strong all-around effort with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks.
The Bulls’ backcourt orchestrated the offense effectively. Stefanie Ingram dished out a game-high 9 assists, consistently breaking down the Privateers’ defense, while L’or Mputu provided an efficient 14 points off the bench. Carla Brito and Jelena Bulajic controlled the glass, with Brito grabbing 9 rebounds and Bulajic adding 6.
For New Orleans, Sharon Smith was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult outing, scoring 19 points and collecting three rebounds. Aaliyah Ellis added 11 points and Lauren Banks also chipped in 11 points with 5 rebounds, but the Privateers lacked the consistent firepower to keep pace.
The game’s trajectory was set from the opening tip. After Smith opened the scoring with a steal and a layup for New Orleans, South Florida responded with a 17-3 run to close the first quarter, capped by a Fatou Diakite tip-in at the buzzer. The Bulls continued to extend their lead throughout the second period, heading into halftime with a commanding 38-23 advantage.
Any hope of a Privateers comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as South Florida’s offense continued to click, outscoring New Orleans 25-20 in the period to take a 63-43 lead into the final frame. The Bulls’ lead ballooned to as many as 34 points in the fourth quarter before settling on the final 32-point margin.
South Florida now looks ahead to a formidable test, hosting Connecticut on Tuesday. New Orleans, still in search of its first win, will next play host to LSU on Dec. 7.
