Texas A&M-Commerce at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a frantic fourth-quarter rally that fell just short, Southeastern Louisiana held off Texas A&M-Commerce for a 76-71 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the University Center.

The home-standing Lions from Southeastern Louisiana appeared to be in control for much of the contest, but had to withstand a 29-point fourth-quarter explosion from the visiting Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce to secure the win. The victory evened both teams’ records at 2-3 for the season.

Southeastern Louisiana built its lead through superior efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. They shot 58.3 percent from three-point range, connecting on 7 of 12 attempts, while Texas A&M-Commerce struggled mightily, making only 4 of 31 from deep. The home team also capitalized at the charity stripe, making 19 of 23 free throws compared to a 13-for-23 performance from the visitors.

Eryn McKinzie nearly recorded a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Aliyah Collins contributed 10 points and four assists.

Despite the loss, Texas A&M-Commerce dominated in several hustle categories. They outscored Southeastern Louisiana 40-24 in the paint, forced 18 turnovers which they converted into 14 points, and recorded more assists, steals, and blocks. Tiani Ellison led the charge for the visitors with 21 points and seven rebounds. Rezia Castillo, Nina Horvath, and Reza Po each added 10 points.

Southeastern Louisiana established an early lead, closing the first quarter up 20-13. They maintained that advantage through the second and third quarters, leading 32-29 at halftime and 49-42 heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw Texas A&M-Commerce mount a relentless comeback, but Southeastern Louisiana consistently answered each push. Key free throws from Azouri and Natalie Huff in the final minute ultimately sealed the five-point victory for the home team in front of a crowd of 278.
