Jacksonville State Holds Off New Orleans’ Late Rally for Road Win

NEW ORLEANS (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic and frantic fourth-quarter comeback that fell just short, the Jacksonville State women’s basketball team held off the University of New Orleans for a 65-62 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kiefer Lakefront Arena.

The Gamecocks appeared to be in complete control, building a commanding 20-point lead late in the third quarter, only to watch the Privateers mount a furious 28-point fourth-quarter rally that turned a potential blowout into a nail-biter decided in the final seconds.

Jacksonville State established its dominance early, outscoring New Orleans 18-10 in the opening period and taking a 29-24 lead into halftime. The Gamecocks then extended their advantage with a 19-point third quarter while holding the Privateers to just 10 points, seemingly putting the game out of reach.

The final period, however, told a different story. New Orleans, led by a determined offensive surge, exploded for 28 points. A critical sequence saw the Privateers’ Mikayla Johnson convert a trio of free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with 15 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 60-58. After Jacksonville State’s Adriana Jones split a pair of free throws, Johnson struck again, sinking a 3-pointer to tie the game at 61 with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

Jones was then fouled and calmly made both free throws to put the Gamecocks back ahead 63-61. On the ensuing possession, Shanihya Brown drove to the basket for a layup, pulling New Orleans to within a single point at 63-62 with 9 seconds remaining. The Privateers were forced to foul, and Jones once again stepped to the line, sinking two clutch free throws to extend the lead back to three.

New Orleans’ last-gasp attempt to force overtime fell short as a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer missed its mark, allowing Jacksonville State to escape with the win.

The victory was secured despite significant struggles at the free-throw line for the Gamecocks, who shot just 11 for 24. New Orleans was not much better, converting 9 of 22 attempts from the charity stripe. Both teams also battled turnover issues, with Jacksonville State committing 16 and New Orleans giving the ball away 17 times.

Jacksonville State was led by a standout performance from Vitoria Carvalho. The 6-foot-3 sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes of action. The Gamecocks’ leading scorer was Mya Barnes, a 6-foot guard from Montgomery, Alabama, who poured in 22 points and added four rebounds and two blocks.

For the Privateers, the comeback effort was fueled by Shanihya Brown. The 5-foot-5 guard from Chicago scored 20 points, dished out three assists, and recorded three steals. Mikayla Johnson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Columbus, Georgia, provided a significant spark with 16 points and six rebounds.

Jacksonville State improved its season record to 2-3 with the victory, while New Orleans’s search for its first win continues as they fell to 0-5.

The Gamecocks will now travel to California for a two-game swing, facing UC Davis on Nov. 28 and Pacific on Nov. 29. New Orleans returns to action at home on Nov. 26 against Houston Christian.
