American at La Salle
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The La Salle Explorers used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the American Eagles and secure a 72-61 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Tom Gola Arena.
In a contest defined by turnovers and defensive pressure, the Explorers improved to 5-1 on the season while the Eagles fell to 1-4.
The game was a tight affair through the first half, with La Salle holding a narrow 27-18 lead at halftime. American’s offense struggled mightily in the second quarter, managing just seven points. The momentum shifted decisively after the break, as La Salle erupted for 24 points in the third quarter, extending their lead and creating a cushion that American could not overcome despite a 25-point fourth-quarter rally.
American’s offense was hampered by 22 turnovers, which La Salle converted into 13 points. The Explorers also capitalized on their presence inside, outscoring the Eagles 26-14 in the paint and outrebounding them on the offensive glass, 10 to 6.
La Salle’s victory was a balanced effort, led by Joan Quinn who scored 20 points. Ivona Miljanic added 16 points, and Ashleigh Connor finished with 13 points and four assists. The Explorers’ defense was equally impactful, recording 12 steals and six blocks.
American was carried by the standout performance of Molly Driscoll, who poured in a game-high 29 points. Charlotte Tuhy recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and Lexi Salazar contributed nine rebounds and four assists in the losing effort.
Both teams shot an identical 10 for 25 from three-point range, but La Salle’s superior efficiency inside the arc and at the free-throw line, where they went 12 for 18 compared to American’s 9 for 12, proved to be critical differences. The Explorers also distributed the ball more effectively, tallying 12 assists to American’s eight.
The announced attendance was 348.
La Salle, which entered the game with a 94.90 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, will look to continue its strong start when it hosts Villanova on Tuesday. American, still seeking its rhythm in the early season, will return home to face Yale on Wednesday.
