Princeton Outlasts Penn State in High-Scoring Women’s Basketball Showdown

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Interstat) — In a high-octane, back-and-forth offensive showcase, the Princeton Tigers outlasted the Penn State Lady Lions 100-93 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at Imperial Arena.

The contest, played before an intimate crowd of 218, featured 16 lead changes and was not decided until the final minute. Both teams displayed remarkable offensive efficiency, but Princeton’s ability to force turnovers and capitalize at the free-throw line ultimately proved decisive.

Penn State opened the game with a blistering first quarter, building a 24-14 lead behind the dominant interior play of Gracie Merkle. The 6-foot-6 center from Mount Washington, Kentucky, was unstoppable early, scoring repeatedly at the rim. The Lady Lions maintained their advantage through much of the second quarter, but Princeton closed the first half on a 12-4 run to trim the deficit to 44-34 at halftime.

The third quarter saw a dramatic shift in momentum as the Tigers’ offense erupted. Princeton outscored Penn State 31-25 in the period, fueled by a balanced attack from Skye Belker, Madison St. Rose and Fadima Tall. The Tigers’ defensive pressure also intensified, leading to several transition opportunities that whittled away the Lady Lions’ lead.

The fourth quarter evolved into a shootout, with both teams combining for 65 points. Princeton finally seized control with a critical 8-0 run midway through the period, turning a two-point deficit into a six-point lead it would not relinquish. Penn State mounted several challenges down the stretch, but the Tigers consistently answered with clutch baskets and sealed the victory by making 19 of 21 free throws in the game.

Princeton’s backcourt trio was magnificent. Skye Belker, a guard from Los Angeles, led all scorers with 27 points and added five assists. Madison St. Rose recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Fadima Tall contributed 22 points, six rebounds and three assists. Ashley Chea orchestrated the offense with 13 points and seven assists.

For Penn State, Gracie Merkle delivered a phenomenal individual performance, scoring a team-high 39 points on remarkably efficient shooting, primarily from inside the paint. She added seven rebounds. Guard Kiyomi McMiller from Silver Spring, Maryland, filled the stat sheet with 19 points and eight assists. Moriah Murray added 20 points and five assists.

While Penn State held a significant advantage in points in the paint, 54-38, and shot a higher percentage from the field, Princeton’s strengths elsewhere were overwhelming. The Tigers dished out 13 assists to Penn State’s six and recorded 13 steals, leading to 18 points off turnovers. Princeton also committed only 12 turnovers compared to 16 for the Lady Lions.

The loss was the first of the season for Penn State, which now holds a record of 4-1. Princeton also moved to 4-1 on the young season. Both teams are scheduled to continue their non-conference schedules Sunday, with Princeton facing Maryland-Eastern Shore at Imperial Arena and Penn State returning home to prepare for a Nov. 30 matchup against Yale.
