Sam Houston Routs Louisiana-Monroe in Defensive Showcase
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and frigid shooting, the Sam Houston Bearkats methodically dispatched the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 57-34 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The game was never in serious doubt for the home team, as Sam Houston’s defense suffocated the Warhawks from the opening tip. Louisiana-Monroe’s offensive woes were historic in their inefficiency. The Warhawks managed just 34 points on 76 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 44.7, a figure that underscored a night of near-constant frustration. They shot a dismal 12 of 54 from the field, a 22.2 percent clip, and compounded their problems by committing 35 turnovers.
Sam Houston, while not setting any offensive records itself, capitalized on the Warhawks’ mistakes with relentless defensive pressure. The Bearkats recorded 16 steals, led by the backcourt duo of Fanta Kone and Annika Corcoran, and converted Louisiana-Monroe’s miscues into a steady stream of points. Sam Houston finished with 57 points on 80 possessions, an offensive rating of 70.8, and shot 20 of 51 from the floor.
The tone was set in a disastrous first quarter for the visitors. Louisiana-Monroe managed only four points, falling behind 11-4 as they turned the ball over repeatedly against Sam Houston’s aggressive defense. The Warhawks showed a brief flicker of life in the second quarter, outscoring the Bearkats 14-17 in the period to narrow the halftime deficit to 28-18, but any hope of a comeback was swiftly extinguished after the break.
Sam Houston put the game away decisively in the third quarter, holding Louisiana-Monroe to a mere five points while stretching their lead to 47-23. The Warhawks never threatened in the final period, with both teams emptying their benches as the clock wound down on the 23-point victory.
Fanta Kone was the offensive engine for the Bearkats, leading all scorers with 22 points. The guard from Bamako, Mali, added three steals in 32 minutes of action. She was ably supported by Annika Corcoran, who tallied 13 points and three assists, and Deborah Ogayemi, who chipped in 11 points and a block. The Bearkats’ ball movement was superior, evidenced by their 16 assists on 20 made baskets.
For Louisiana-Monroe, the offensive struggles were team-wide. Marcavia Shavers, a 6-foot-2 post player from Biloxi, Mississippi, was the Warhawks’ leading scorer with eight points but was hampered by the team’s overall inability to execute. Asjah Inniss contributed six points and three assists, while Nakiyah Mays-Prince added five points.
The statistical disparity was stark. Sam Houston’s defense forced 35 turnovers while committing 25 of their own. The Warhawks did manage to dominate the offensive glass, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds to Sam Houston’s five, but they were unable to convert those second chances into meaningful production, shooting just 2 of 13 from three-point range and 8 of 15 from the free-throw line.
The victory pushes Sam Houston’s record to 4-1 on the young season, matching the Warhawks’ record, which also now stands at 4-1. The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 432.
Both teams will look to build on their early-season form in their next outings. Louisiana-Monroe returns home to face Lamar on Sunday, Nov. 23. Sam Houston remains at home and will host North American on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
