North Carolina at North Carolina A&T
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — The North Carolina women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, cruising to an 85-50 victory over North Carolina A&T on Thursday night at Corbett Sports Center.
The Tar Heels seized control early, holding the Aggies to just eight points in the first quarter while building a 14-8 lead. The game was decisively put out of reach in the second period, where North Carolina exploded for 29 points, outscoring the home team by 16 to take a 43-21 advantage into halftime.
North Carolina’s defense was the story of the game, forcing 24 Aggies turnovers and converting them into numerous transition opportunities. The Tar Heels also racked up 13 steals and five blocks, stifling the North Carolina A&T offense throughout the contest. The Aggies struggled mightily from beyond the arc, failing to connect on any of their six three-point attempts, and shot just 51.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Offensively, the Tar Heels shared the scoring load with a balanced attack. Indya Nivar, a guard from Apex, North Carolina, led all scorers with 14 points in 24 minutes, adding three assists and two blocks. She was complemented by Elina Aarnisalo of Helsinki, Finland, who chipped in 13 points and two assists.
The frontcourt also contributed significantly. Ciera Toomey of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, scored 12 points, while Nyla Brooks from Waldorf, Maryland, matched that total with 12 points of her own and added two blocks.
For the Aggies, Chaniya Clark of Fort Myers, Florida, was a bright spot, leading her team with 14 points. Anaya Karriem from West Orange, New Jersey, provided a boost off the bench with 11 points.
The victory improves North Carolina’s record to 4-1 on the young season, while North Carolina A&T falls to 2-4.
The Tar Heels return to action Sunday at home against UNC Greensboro. North Carolina A&T looks to rebound on the road at North Carolina Central on Dec. 2.
