Balanced Tar Heels Roll Past Aggies in Nonconference Road Win
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — The North Carolina Tar Heels delivered a commanding defensive performance, cruising to an 85-50 victory over the North Carolina A&T Aggies in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Corbett Sports Center.
From the opening tip, the visiting Tar Heels imposed their will, building a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The game was effectively decided before halftime, as North Carolina erupted for 29 points in the second quarter, stretching their advantage to 43-21 at the break. The Aggies struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a swarming Tar Heels defense, failing to score more than 17 points in any single quarter.
The statistical disparity painted a clear picture of the lopsided contest. North Carolina’s offense operated with high efficiency, scoring 105.3 points per 100 possessions, while the Aggies managed a meager 62.7 points per 100 trips down the floor. The Tar Heels’ defensive pressure was a defining factor, forcing 24 North Carolina A&T turnovers and converting them into numerous transition opportunities. North Carolina also recorded 13 steals and blocked five shots.
A balanced scoring attack propelled the Tar Heels, with four players reaching double figures. Indya Nivar, a guard from Apex, North Carolina, led the way with 14 points in 24 minutes, adding three assists and two blocks. She was instrumental in both orchestrating the offense and applying defensive pressure.
She was complemented by guard Elina Aarnisalo of Helsinki, Finland, who scored 13 points, and a potent frontcourt duo. Forward Ciera Toomey of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, contributed 12 points, while post player Nyla Brooks from Waldorf, Maryland, also chipped in 14 points and two blocks. Guard Lanie Grant of Midlothian, Virginia, facilitated the offense with a team-high three assists to go with her eight points.
The Tar Heels’ offense was fueled by volume three-point shooting, connecting on 12 of 34 attempts from beyond the arc. In stark contrast, the Aggies failed to make a three-pointer, missing all six of their attempts. North Carolina also dominated the glass, securing 11 offensive rebounds which led to 15 second-chance points.
North Carolina A&T was led by center Chaniya Clark of Fort Myers, Florida, who scored 14 points and registered a block. Forward Anaya Karriem from West Orange, New Jersey, provided a spark off the bench with 11 points. However, the Aggies’ offensive struggles were compounded by poor free-throw shooting, converting only 16 of 31 attempts from the line.
The victory improves North Carolina’s season record to 4-1 as they continue to build momentum in the early season. The loss drops North Carolina A&T to 2-4.
The Tar Heels’ defensive intensity was on full display from the outset, creating turnovers and converting them into easy baskets. The game’s trajectory was set early as North Carolina built a double-digit lead that only expanded as the contest wore on. The Aggies, despite playing at home, could not counter the Tar Heels’ superior size, speed, and defensive execution.
With the win, North Carolina now looks ahead to a home game against UNC Greensboro on Sunday. North Carolina A&T will seek to regroup and return to the win column when they travel to face North Carolina Central on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
