Lamar Rallies Past Texas-Arlington for First Win
BEAUMONT, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Lamar Lady Cardinals secured their first victory of the season, defeating the Texas-Arlington Mavericks 66-55 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at the Montagne Center.
A crowd of 1,150 watched as Lamar used a dominant second half, fueled by a relentless defense that forced 22 Mavericks turnovers, to pull away and improve its record to 1-3. Texas-Arlington, which had won two straight coming into the contest, fell to 2-3.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Texas-Arlington holding a narrow 34-26 lead at halftime. The Mavericks’ offense, however, went cold after the break, scoring only 10 points in the third quarter as Lamar seized control. The Lady Cardinals outscored Texas-Arlington 40-21 in the second half, capitalizing on a stark disparity in points off turnovers. Lamar converted 25 points from Mavericks miscues, while Texas-Arlington managed only 15 points off Lamar’s 19 turnovers.
The game’s statistical profile painted a clear picture of the Mavericks’ offensive woes. Texas-Arlington struggled profoundly from beyond the arc, making just one of its 15 three-point attempts. While they found more success inside, scoring 28 points in the paint and shooting 18 for 23 from the free-throw line, their overall offensive efficiency was stymied by Lamar’s defensive pressure. The Mavericks finished with an offensive rating of 78.7, scoring 55 points on 70 possessions.
Lamar, by contrast, operated more effectively on offense, posting an offensive rating of 98.8 by scoring 66 points on 67 possessions. The Lady Cardinals shot 21 for 46 from the floor and 21 for 29 from the free-throw line. They also won the battle on the glass, securing 12 offensive rebounds to Texas-Arlington’s 10, and dished out 11 assists to the Mavericks’ seven.
Jacei Denley, a guard from Beaumont, led all scorers with 15 points for Lamar. She was instrumental in the second-half surge, contributing key baskets and free throws down the stretch. Teammate Shaila Forman added 13 points, while Kamryn Wilson and Chisom Oguego provided significant all-around contributions. Wilson finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two assists, and Oguego tallied seven points and seven rebounds in just 18 minutes of play.
For Texas-Arlington, the scoring was led by Nya Threatt with 13 points and Kira Reynolds with 12. Reynolds, a 6-foot-4 post player from South Bend, Indiana, also added six rebounds and two blocks. Her sister, Mila Reynolds, chipped in 10 points.
The victory was a crucial one for Lamar, which entered the game as a statistical favorite with a 67.1 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, after dropping its first three contests of the season on the road. For Texas-Arlington, the loss halted the momentum gained from consecutive home wins over Tennessee State and Wyoming.
Lamar will look to build on this victory when it hosts St. Mary’s on Wednesday. Texas-Arlington will travel to Laie, Hawaii, to face Colorado in its next contest on Saturday as part of a multi-game tournament.
