Brown at Maryland-Baltimore County

CATONSVILLE, Md. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and turnovers, the Brown Bears edged the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers 56-54 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at the Retriever Activities Center.

The contest was a battle of attrition, with both teams struggling to find offensive consistency. Brown secured its first win of the season, improving to 1-2, while UMBC fell to an even 2-2.

Alyssa Moreland was the cornerstone of Brown’s victory, posting a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Her presence on the glass was pivotal for the Bears, who were out-rebounded on the offensive end but relied on her 14 defensive boards to limit the Retrievers’ second-chance points.

The game was tight throughout, with neither team able to build a substantial lead. Brown’s offense, while inefficient, managed to do just enough. The Bears shot 39.6 percent from the floor and a respectable 37.5 percent from three-point range, but were hampered by 20 turnovers and a 12-for-22 performance from the free-throw line.

UMBC’s offensive woes were more pronounced. The Retrievers shot just 29.8 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. Their saving grace was a perfect 15-for-15 mark on free throws, which kept them within striking distance. However, they committed 21 turnovers of their own, which the Bears converted into 12 points.

Kennedy Austin led the Retrievers with 15 points, while Dagny Slomack provided a crucial spark off the bench, scoring 16 points, including a late three-pointer that cut Brown’s lead to two points with under a minute to play. Charlotte Adams-Lopez was a key contributor for Brown, adding 14 points.

The final minutes were a tense affair. After Slomack’s three made it 54-51, Brown’s Elizabeth Nelson answered with a three-pointer of her own to extend the lead back to six. UMBC’ Slomack hit another three to make it 56-54 with 40 seconds remaining. The Retrievers had a chance to tie or take the lead on their final possession, but a Heidi Williams three-point attempt missed, and Moreland secured the defensive rebound to seal the victory for the Bears.

The game was a stark contrast in styles. Brown managed 22 points in the paint, while UMBC capitalized more effectively on mistakes, scoring 20 points off turnovers. Defensively, UMBC held an edge with five blocks, three from Williams, compared to Brown’s three.
