Brown Edges UMBC in Tight Women’s Basketball Contest

CATONSVILLE, Md. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and relentless pressure, the Brown Bears edged the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers 56-54 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Retriever Activities Center.

The contest was a battle of attrition, with both teams struggling to find offensive consistency. Brown improved its season record to 1-2, while UMBC moved to an even 2-2.

The game was ultimately decided at the free-throw line in the final minute. With 48 seconds remaining and the score tied at 54, Brown’s Alyssa Moreland was fouled and sent to the line for two shots. The graduate student from Beverly, Massachusetts, missed the first attempt but calmly sank the second to give the Bears a one-point lead.

UMBC had two chances to reclaim the lead in the final 19 seconds. After a Brown turnover, the Retrievers called a timeout to set up a play. The ensuing possession resulted in a contested 3-point attempt by Heidi Williams that missed, and Moreland secured the defensive rebound with one second left to seal the victory for the Bears.

Moreland was instrumental in the win, posting a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. She was complemented by Charlotte Adams-Lopez, who led the Bears with 14 points.

The Retrievers were paced by a game-high 16 points from Dagny Slomack of South Orange, New Jersey. Kennedy Austin from Waldorf, Maryland, added 15 points for UMBC.

The game was characterized by poor shooting and a high number of turnovers. Brown shot just 39.6 percent from the floor, while UMBC was even colder at 29.8 percent. Both teams combined for 41 turnovers, with Brown committing 20 and UMBC giving the ball away 21 times.

Defense and free-throw shooting were the contrasting keys to the game. UMBC was perfect from the charity stripe, making all 15 of its attempts. Brown, conversely, struggled mightily, converting only 12 of its 22 free throws. The Bears, however, compensated with a stifling defense that held UMBC to an offensive rating of 71.9 points per 100 possessions, compared to their own 77.3.

Brown also won the battle in the paint, outscoring UMBC 22-16, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities despite grabbing only six offensive rebounds to UMBC’s 10.

The game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes, with neither team able to build a substantial advantage. The largest lead of the game was just six points. The back-and-forth nature persisted until the final buzzer, with Moreland’s late free throw providing the decisive margin.

For Brown, Olivia Young of Durham, North Carolina, contributed nine points, and Elizabeth Nelson from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, added seven points and two blocks. Mackenzie Leahy of West Dundee, Illinois, facilitated the offense with a team-high two assists.

UMBC’s defense was anchored by Heidi Williams of Prince George County, Maryland, who recorded three blocks and six rebounds. Delaney Yarborough from Ellicott City, Maryland, provided a strong interior presence with seven points and five rebounds in just nine minutes of play. Gabby Scott, also of Ellicott City, pulled down seven rebounds.

The victory gives Brown momentum heading into a three-game homestand, beginning with Boston University on Wednesday. UMBC looks to rebound on the road Thursday against Maryland-Eastern Shore.
