Gray leads Gardner-Webb past Hampton in Big South women’s basketball
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by frigid shooting, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs secured their first victory of the season, defeating the Hampton Pirates 55-35 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Paul Porter Arena.
The game, a matchup of Big South Conference foes playing a non-league contest, was never in doubt for the home team after they established an early double-digit lead. The Pirates’ offensive woes were historic, as they managed to convert only 11 of their 52 field goal attempts, a dismal 21.2 percent clip. Their struggles were even more pronounced from beyond the arc, where they hit just 4 of 27 three-point attempts.
Gardner-Webb, while not an offensive juggernaut, was efficient by comparison. The Runnin’ Bulldogs shot 45.5 percent from the field, making 20 of 44 shots, and were a solid 9 of 21 from three-point range. The victory improved Gardner-Webb’s record to 1-4, while Hampton fell to 1-2.
The tone was set early. After Hampton’s Taylor Gibson converted a three-point play to give the Pirates a brief 3-0 lead, Gardner-Webb seized control with a 9-0 run. Jaelyn Acker of Gardner-Webb ignited the run with a three-pointer, and Amina Gray capped it with a driving layup and a steal that led to another score, forcing an early Hampton timeout.
Hampton’s offensive execution never recovered. The Pirates turned the ball over 14 times and managed only 12 points in the paint, often settling for contested jump shots that consistently missed the mark. Despite hauling in 11 offensive rebounds, they frequently failed to convert second-chance opportunities.
Gardner-Webb was led by a standout performance from Amina Gray. The guard from Dekalb, Ill., poured in a game-high 18 points, including three crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter that extinguished any faint hope of a Hampton rally. She also added two rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
She was complemented by backcourt mate Jaelyn Acker, who scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds. The duo from Richfield, Wis., provided the consistent scoring punch the Runnin’ Bulldogs needed. In the frontcourt, Amira Ofunniyin was a force, recording a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds from her hometown of Cary, N.C.
For Hampton, Kiarra Mcelrath was the lone bright spot on offense. The guard from Columbus, Ohio, led the Pirates with 12 points and six rebounds. Le’Asia Foreman, from Norfolk, Va., contributed little in the scoring column with just two points but was active on the glass with seven rebounds and two assists.
The game’s statistical profile highlighted the stark contrast in offensive efficiency. Gardner-Webb scored 55 points on 63 possessions, while Hampton needed 64 possessions to muster just 35 points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also dominated inside, outscoring the Pirates 22-12 in the paint.
Gardner-Webb will look to build on its first win when it hosts UNC Wilmington on Wednesday. Hampton, searching for answers after a second consecutive lopsided loss to a Division I opponent, travels to face Norfolk State on Friday.
