Oklahoma Sooners Dominate Western Carolina Catamounts in Lopsided Road Victory
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming dominance from start to finish, the Oklahoma Sooners routed the Western Carolina Catamounts in a nonconference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Ramsey Center.
The Sooners set the tone immediately with a stifling defensive performance, holding the Catamounts to a single field goal in the first quarter and racing out to a 19-5 lead. Oklahoma never relented, expanding its advantage with each subsequent period en route to a lopsided victory before an announced crowd of 1,575.
Oklahoma’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 95 points on 80 possessions. The Sooners shot 50.7 percent from the floor, connecting on 37 of 73 attempts. Their defense was equally impressive, forcing 23 Western Carolina turnovers and converting them into 33 points. The Sooners also dominated the interior, outscoring the Catamounts 54-8 in the paint and securing 15 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
Western Carolina struggled profoundly on offense, managing only 32 points on 72 possessions. The Catamounts shot a meager 21.3 percent from the field, making just 10 of 47 attempts. They were only slightly more successful from beyond the arc, hitting 5 of 22 three-point attempts.
Raegan Beers, a 6-foot-4 forward from Littleton, Colorado, led the Sooners with a commanding double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. She was a constant force inside, making 7 of 11 shots from the field and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line.
Aaliyah Chavez, a 5-10 guard from Lubbock, Texas, orchestrated the offense with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes. Her backcourt partner, Zya Vann, added 14 points and six rebounds. The Sooners’ depth was on full display as Sahara Williams contributed seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block, while Payton Verhulst and Keziah Lofton each chipped in seven points.
For Western Carolina, Taj Hunter was the primary offensive threat, finishing with 12 points and four rebounds. Ally Hollifield added 10 points and three rebounds in a team-high 32 minutes, but the Catamounts could not find any consistent rhythm against Oklahoma’s relentless pressure.
The game was effectively decided in the opening minutes. Oklahoma’s defense created chaos, leading to several early Western Carolina turnovers. A steal by Sahara Williams and a subsequent layup by Raegan Beers, assisted by Williams, opened the scoring and initiated a run from which the Catamounts never recovered. By the time the first quarter ended with a three-pointer from Zya Vann, the Sooners had built a 14-point lead.
The second quarter saw more of the same, with Oklahoma extending its lead to 40-17 by halftime. The Sooners’ offensive outburst continued after the break, outscoring Western Carolina 28-10 in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach before cruising through the final period.
With the victory, Oklahoma improved its season record to 4-1. The Sooners will look to continue their momentum when they host Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday. Western Carolina fell to 2-2 with the loss and will return to action Wednesday at home against UNC Asheville.
