Wisconsin Routs Milwaukee in Women’s Basketball Showdown
MADISON, Wis. (Interstat) — The Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball team delivered a dominant defensive performance, overwhelming the visiting Milwaukee Panthers 75-46 in a non-conference matchup Monday night at the Kohl Center.
From the opening tip, Wisconsin’s pressure was suffocating. The Badgers forced the Panthers into a staggering 24 turnovers, converting those miscues into 32 points. The defensive effort was a collective one, as Wisconsin racked up 16 steals and eight blocked shots, consistently disrupting Milwaukee’s offensive flow and preventing any sustained scoring runs.
The game’s trajectory was set early. After Milwaukee’s Jada Williams hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 3-3, Wisconsin embarked on a 14-2 run, capped by a Destiny Howell layup off an assist from Dorja Iva Zaja. The Badgers closed the first quarter with a flurry, including a three-pointer from Jovana Spasovski at the buzzer, to take a commanding 20-10 lead.
Milwaukee struggled to find any offensive consistency against the swarming Wisconsin defense. The Panthers shot just 29.6 percent from the field and managed only eight points in the paint compared to Wisconsin’s 34. Ball movement was a particular issue for Milwaukee, which finished with only three assists.
The Badgers, by contrast, shared the ball effectively, dishing out 16 assists. Their offensive attack was balanced, with nine players scoring at least four points. Breauna Ware led all scorers with 13 points, while Spasovski added 11. Gift Uchenna was a force in the paint, just missing a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds in only 17 minutes of play, also contributing two blocks and two steals.
Despite the lopsided nature of the game, Milwaukee showed brief flashes of resistance. A three-pointer from Valerie Cassidy-De Falco and a layup from the same player in the third quarter briefly cut the deficit to 14 points, but Wisconsin answered immediately with a three from Ware to snuff out the mini-rally.
The fourth quarter saw the Badgers put the game completely out of reach, outscoring the Panthers 23-10. Ronnie Porter and Laci Steele fueled the final push, combining for several baskets as Wisconsin’s lead ballooned to as many as 31 points before a last-second three-pointer by Milwaukee’s Rita Gomes set the final margin.
Jada Williams led Milwaukee with eight points.
With the victory, Wisconsin improved its season record to 2-1, bouncing back from an overtime loss to Marquette its last time out. Milwaukee fell to 1-2 with the loss.
The Badgers are scheduled to return to action quickly, hosting Bowling Green on Tuesday. Milwaukee’s next contest is at home against Western Michigan on Thursday.
