Wyoming Women Dominate Long Beach State in Home Opener
BOSLER, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Wyoming Cowboys women’s basketball team rebounded from a season-opening loss in emphatic fashion, delivering a dominant 72-39 victory over the Long Beach State 49ers on Friday night at a raucous Arena-Auditorium.
From the opening tip, the Cowboys established a commanding presence, racing out to a 23-4 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The 49ers, opening their season on the road, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a stifling Wyoming defense, shooting a frigid 27.3 percent from the field for the game.
The contest was effectively decided in the first ten minutes. Wyoming’s offense was surgical, hitting 9 of its first 14 shots while its defense forced the 49ers into a series of early turnovers and contested attempts. Long Beach State managed just four points in the opening period, a deficit from which they could not recover.
Wyoming’s offense was fueled by a balanced and efficient attack. Malene Pedersen, a guard from Aabyhoej, Denmark, led all scorers with 15 points and dished out a game-high seven assists in just 26 minutes of action. Logann Alvar, a hometown product from Casper, Wyoming, added 14 points, consistently finding seams in the Long Beach State defense.
The Cowboys’ international flair was on full display as Lana Beslic of Split, Croatia, and Henna Sandvik of Helsinki, Finland, each chipped in 10 points. Beslic also contributed four assists. The team’s ball movement was crisp, resulting in a 54.7 percent shooting performance from the floor and a 42.9 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Defensively, Wyoming was equally impressive. They held Long Beach State to an offensive rating of just 58.4 points per 100 possessions, capitalizing on 12 turnovers and recording eight steals and four blocks. Madi Symons of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was a force in the paint, pulling down key rebounds and registering one of those blocks.
For Long Beach State, the night was a struggle. JaQuoia Jones-Brown, a guard from Atlanta, Georgia, led the 49ers with 13 points and three assists. Judit Oliva Fernandez of El Prat De Llobregat, Spain, was the only other Long Beach State player to approach double figures, finishing with nine points. The team’s leading scorer, Brynna Pukis of Seattle, Washington, was held to six points on 2-of-10 shooting in 30 minutes.
The Cowboys methodically extended their lead throughout the game, entering halftime up 38-19 and taking a 56-28 advantage into the final quarter. The 49ers showed brief flashes in the second quarter, scoring 15 points, but could not string together enough stops to mount a serious challenge.
The victory improves Wyoming’s record to 1-1 on the young season, bouncing back from a 56-47 home loss to Saint Mary’s just three days prior. Long Beach State begins its campaign 0-1.
Wyoming will look to build on this momentum as they embark on a three-game road trip, starting with a contest at Texas-Arlington on Tuesday. Long Beach State continues its own challenging early-season travel, heading to Colorado State for a game on Sunday. The 49ers’ next ten games feature a mix of road tests and home contests, including a high-profile matchup at UCLA on December 20.
The game’s outcome aligned with statistical projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Wyoming a 92.6 percent probability of securing the win. A crowd of 1,974 witnessed the Cowboys’ comprehensive performance, which showcased a potent offense and a smothering defense that set the tone for the evening.
