Texans Edge Colts in High-Scoring Finale

HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless offensive surges and a dramatic final-play defensive touchdown, the Houston Texans outlasted the Indianapolis Colts 38-30 on Sunday at NRG Stadium to close their regular season with a 12-5 record.

The contest, a wild shootout that saw five lead changes, was ultimately decided in the final seconds when the Colts’ desperate, multi-lateral play on the game’s final snap resulted in a fumble that Houston recovered in the end zone for a clinching touchdown as time expired.

Indianapolis, which finished its season at 8-9, struck first and fast. On their second offensive drive, Colts quarterback Riley Leonard, the rookie from Fairhope, Alabama, connected with wide receiver Alec Pierce on a 66-yard touchdown pass just over five minutes into the game. Leonard finished the day completing 21 of 34 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns, adding 21 rushing yards and another score on the ground. Pierce was his primary weapon, hauling in four catches for 132 yards and both receiving touchdowns.

Houston, however, methodically chipped away at the early deficit with the steady leg of kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, who was perfect on the day, making all six of his field goal attempts from 29, 43, 44, 48, 51, and 43 yards. His first two kicks in the opening quarter answered the Colts’ early touchdown and a subsequent Blake Grupe field goal for Indianapolis, making the score 10-6 at the end of the first period.

The second quarter belonged to the Texans and quarterback C.J. Stroud, the team’s top star. Stroud engineered a 12-play, 70-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jayden Higgins, giving Houston its first lead at 13-10. After a quick three-and-out forced by the Houston defense, which saw linebacker Danielle Hunter sack Leonard, the Texans struck again. A muffed punt by the Colts set Houston up at the Indianapolis 17-yard line, and two plays later, Stroud scrambled in from two yards out for a touchdown, extending the lead to 20-10.

Stroud was efficient, completing 14 of 23 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Davis Mills in the second half. He also rushed for five yards and the critical score.

Leonard responded just before halftime, leading a crisp 65-yard drive in just over a minute. He found Pierce for an eight-yard touchdown with 1:25 remaining to pull the Colts within three points. Stroud, however, moved the Texans back into field goal range in the closing seconds, and Fairbairn nailed a 29-yarder as time expired in the half to send Houston to the locker room with a 23-17 advantage.

Indianapolis reclaimed momentum immediately after halftime. Leonard needed only five plays to drive the Colts 65 yards, finishing the series with a one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown, pushing Indianapolis back in front 24-23. The key play was a 53-yard deep strike from Leonard to Pierce down to the Houston 1-yard line.

The teams then traded field goals—a 43-yarder from Fairbairn and a 39-yarder from Grupe—to maintain the Colts’ tenuous 27-26 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The most important sequence of the game began early in the final period. With Houston’s offense stalling under Mills, the Colts took over looking to extend their one-point lead. They embarked on a marathon, 18-play drive that consumed over nine minutes of clock. However, the Houston defense, led by linebacker Damone Clark’s team-high seven tackles and a key interception by cornerback Alijah Huzzie earlier in the half, stiffened inside its own 10-yard line. The Colts managed only a 22-yard Grupe field goal, taking a 30-26 lead but leaving the Texans 2:39 to work with.

Mills, who completed 3 of 9 passes for 36 yards in relief, then executed the game-winning drive. Starting at his own 35, he hit Xavier Hutchinson for 17 yards and found Jaylin Noel for 13 more to move into Indianapolis territory. Running back British Brooks, who provided a crucial spark with 48 yards on 10 carries in the second half, grinded out key yards to set up Fairbairn’s game-winning kick. With 12 seconds left, Fairbairn calmly drilled his sixth field goal, a 43-yarder, to put Houston ahead 32-30.

The drama was not over. On the ensuing kickoff, the Colts’ Ashton Dulin returned it to the Indianapolis 25 with five seconds left. On the game’s final play, Leonard completed a short pass over the middle to Josh Downs, who lateraled back in a frantic attempt to keep the play alive. The series of laterals quickly broke down, and the ball was eventually fumbled into the end zone, where Houston recovered for a defensive touchdown as the clock hit zero, providing the final 38-30 margin.

The Texans’ defense, while yielding 30 points, made critical stands and takeaways. Alongside Clark, linebacker Zaire Franklin was a force for Indianapolis with a game-high 12 tackles. The game’s total of 68 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 39.5, and the Texans covered as 10.5-point favorites, outperforming Interstat’s game simulator projection of a 30-25 Houston victory. The win gave Houston a season sweep of the Colts, having also won 20-16 in Indianapolis on Nov. 30.
