Lawrence Leads Jaguars to Commanding Win Over Colts
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Trevor Lawrence orchestrated a dominant first-half offensive display and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense forced two critical turnovers to propel them to a 36-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at EverBank Stadium.
The win, witnessed by a crowd of 60,067, improved the Jaguars’ record to 9-4 and solidified their position atop the AFC South, while the Colts fell to 8-5.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the opening quarter and set the tone for the afternoon. After the teams traded punts to start, Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who started the game, made a costly mistake on Indianapolis’s first offensive series. Under pressure, Jones attempted a pass over the middle that was intercepted by Jacksonville linebacker Devin Lloyd, who returned it to the Indianapolis 21-yard line.
Lawrence and the Jaguars’ offense swiftly capitalized on the short field. A key 18-yard completion to Brian Thomas Jr. moved the ball to the 7, and three plays later, running back Travis Etienne plunged up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown to give Jacksonville an early 7-0 lead.
Indianapolis responded with an impressive 11-play, 75-yard drive of its own, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Jonathan Taylor to tie the game. The momentum was short-lived. Lawrence immediately led the Jaguars on another scoring march, this time covering 74 yards in just six plays. He connected with Thomas for 39 yards and later found Brenton Strange for 16, before hitting Jakobi Meyers on a 14-yard touchdown pass to reclaim a 14-7 lead.
The Colts’ offense, now led by rookie Riley Leonard after the early interception, struggled to find consistency against an aggressive Jacksonville defense. The Jaguars extended their lead in the second quarter when Etienne broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run, making it 21-7.
Indianapolis managed a 28-yard field goal from Blake Grupe to cut the deficit to 21-10, but Lawrence authored a masterful two-minute drill just before halftime. Starting at his own 29 with 1:41 remaining, Lawrence completed passes of 37 yards to Tim Patrick and 7 yards to Strange to move into the red zone. After using his legs to scramble for 7 yards to the 5, Lawrence ultimately found Patrick on a short 8-yard touchdown pass with just seven seconds left in the half, giving Jacksonville a commanding 28-10 lead at the break.
Lawrence finished the game completing 17 of 30 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, adding 16 yards on four rushes. His efficient performance, particularly in the first half, was the catalyst for the Jaguars’ offensive success. Patrick was his top target, hauling in five catches for 78 yards and the score, while Thomas added three receptions for 87 yards.
The second half saw the Colts attempt to rally. Leonard led a drive that resulted in a 36-yard Grupe field goal on the opening possession of the third quarter, making it 28-13. The Indianapolis defense then forced a three-and-out, but the offense could not sustain momentum, punting the ball back to Jacksonville.
The Jaguars put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a methodical 14-play, 54-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock and ended with a 35-yard field goal from Cam Little. After Leonard threw his second interception of the day, this one to cornerback Greg Newsome II, Jacksonville added another Little field goal, this time from 48 yards, to extend the lead to 34-13 with 4:41 remaining.
Leonard led a late scoring drive for the Colts, scrambling for a 6-yard touchdown with 1:51 to play, but the two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 34-19. Little tacked on a final field goal for Jacksonville to provide the final margin.
Leonard completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions in relief. Jones was 5 of 7 for 60 yards before being benched. Taylor was a bright spot for Indianapolis, rushing for 76 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Alec Pierce caught five passes for 80 yards for the Colts.
Defensively, the Jaguars were led by a swarm of tacklers. Safety Antonio Johnson and linebacker Devin Lloyd each had eight tackles, with Lloyd adding an interception. Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun had a team-high seven tackles, while Travon Walker added six. The unit held the Colts to just 145 net passing yards.
For Indianapolis, linebacker Zaire Franklin recorded seven tackles, while defensive end JT Tuimoloau had six.
The victory gives Jacksonville a crucial head-to-head tiebreaker over Indianapolis with the two teams scheduled to meet again in Indianapolis on Dec. 28. The Jaguars will host the New York Jets next Sunday, while the Colts travel to face the Seattle Seahawks.
