Packers edge Giants in late-season NFL matchup

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Interstat) — The Green Bay Packers, utilizing a two-quarterback system and a clutch fourth-quarter drive, held off a late surge by the New York Giants to secure a 27-20 victory on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

In a game defined by momentum swings and key defensive stops, the Packers improved to 6-3-1, while the Giants’ difficult season continued, dropping them to 2-9-1 before a crowd of 82,438.

The Giants struck first, capitalizing on their opening possession with a methodical 10-play, 65-yard drive. Jameis Winston orchestrated the march, connecting with Wan’Dale Robinson for 20 yards and Isaiah Hodgins for another 20 to set up first-and-goal. Devin Singletary finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, giving New York an early 7-0 lead.

Green Bay’s offense initially sputtered, but the game turned on a strategic shift at the end of the first quarter. With the Packers driving deep into Giants territory, backup quarterback Malik Willis entered the game. Willis immediately provided a spark, scrambling for 16 yards to the New York 16. After a series of runs by Josh Jacobs, Willis found Christian Watson on a 1-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to tie the game.

The Packers kept the momentum on their next drive. Starting quarterback Jordan Love returned and engineered an 11-play, 74-yard scoring drive. The key play was a 35-yard pass interference penalty on Giants safety Dane Belton that placed the ball at the New York 3. Two plays later, Emanuel Wilson punched it in from 11 yards out to give Green Bay a 13-7 lead after Lucas Havrisik’s extra point.

New York responded with a long drive of its own just before halftime. Winston methodically moved the Giants down the field, mixing runs by Tyrone Tracy Jr. and passes to Hodgins and Theo Johnson. The drive stalled at the Green Bay 2-yard line, but Singletary powered in for his second touchdown of the day. However, Younghoe Koo’s extra point attempt sailed wide left, leaving the score at 13-13 heading into the break.

Green Bay reclaimed the lead on its first possession of the third quarter. A 35-yard defensive pass interference penalty again on Belton set the Packers up at the New York 3. Love then connected with tight end Josh Whyle for a 2-yard touchdown. Havrisik missed the extra point, keeping the Packers’ lead at six points, 19-13.

The Giants’ offense, which relied heavily on Tracy throughout the game, mounted a sustained drive to open the fourth quarter. New York marched 85 yards on 16 plays, chewing up over seven minutes of clock. Winston capped the drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown, and Koo’s extra point gave the Giants a 20-19 lead with 7:22 remaining.

Facing a deficit, Love and the Packers’ offense delivered. Love completed a critical 33-yard pass to Savion Williams to move into Giants territory. A 15-yard run by Wilson and a 13-yard completion to Romeo Doubs set up first-and-goal. On second down, Love found Watson in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown strike. The Packers successfully converted a two-point attempt, with Love hitting Wilson out of the backfield, to take a 27-20 lead with just over four minutes to play.

The Giants had two final chances to tie the game. The first ended abruptly when Packers safety Evan Williams intercepted a Winston pass intended for Jalin Hyatt in the end zone for a touchback with 36 seconds left. After forcing a Green Bay punt, the Giants got the ball back at their own 18 with 10 seconds remaining, but Winston was sacked as time expired.

Love finished the game 13 for 24 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Willis provided a dynamic change of pace, completing both of his pass attempts for six yards and a touchdown while adding 16 rushing yards. Watson was Love’s primary target, catching four passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson led the Packers’ ground attack with 40 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

For the Giants, Winston was 19 of 29 for 201 yards and one interception, adding 10 rushing yards and a touchdown. Tracy was the workhorse, accumulating 88 rushing yards on 19 carries and catching four passes for 51 yards. Hodgins led all receivers with five catches for 57 yards.

Defensively, Isaiah McDuffie and Evan Williams stood out for Green Bay, with McDuffie recording 11 tackles and Williams making nine tackles and the game-sealing interception. For New York, linebackers Bobby Okereke and Dane Belton each had seven tackles.

The Packers now look ahead to a pivotal NFC North matchup against the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday. The Giants will travel to Detroit to face the Lions.
