Carolina at Atlanta
ATLANTA (Interstat) — Bryce Young threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns, including a dramatic late fourth-quarter score and two-point conversion to force overtime, and the Carolina Panthers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 30-27 on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Ryan Fitzgerald’s 28-yard field goal in the extra period secured the victory for the Panthers, who improved to 6-5. The Falcons fell to 3-7 with the loss.
The game was a seesaw affair that saw Carolina squander a 14-point lead, then mount a furious comeback in the final minutes of regulation. Young orchestrated a 65-yard drive in just 47 seconds, capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tetairoa McMillan with 1:08 remaining. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Young connected with Jalen Coker to knot the score at 27-27.
In overtime, Carolina’s defense forced a quick three-and-out from the Falcons. The Panthers then took over and efficiently moved into field goal range, keyed by a 54-yard catch-and-run by tight end Tommy Tremble. After three runs by Rico Dowdle positioned the ball, Fitzgerald split the uprights for the game-winner.
Young finished the game completing 31 of 45 passes. His favorite target was McMillan, who hauled in eight receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Legette added four catches for 83 yards and a score.
The Falcons’ offense was led by a powerful ground game, spearheaded by Bijan Robinson. The running back carried the ball 23 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 39 yards. Receiver Drake London was a key contributor through the air with seven catches for 119 yards.
Atlanta’s quarterback situation was less stable. Michael Penix Jr. started the game and was efficient, completing 13 of 16 passes for 175 yards before being replaced by Kirk Cousins in the second half. Cousins struggled, completing just six of 14 attempts for 48 yards and leading the offense to a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter to take the lead before Carolina’s final drive.
Defensively, the Panthers were led by safeties Tre’von Moehrig and Nick Scott, who recorded 11 and eight tackles, respectively. For Atlanta, safety Ronnie Harrison Jr. had 11 tackles and a sack.
The game defied pregame projections, which heavily favored the Falcons. Carolina’s victory avenges a loss to New Orleans from the previous week and completes a season sweep of their NFC South rival after a 30-0 win in Week 3. The Falcons have now lost three straight games.
