Seattle at Washington

LANDOVER, Md. (Interstat) — Sam Darnold delivered a near-perfect performance, completing 21 of 24 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns as the Seattle Seahawks dominated the Washington Commanders 38-14 on Sunday at FedEx Field.

The Seahawks improved to 6-2, while the Commanders fell to 3-6 in a game that was effectively decided by a devastating second-quarter offensive explosion from the visitors.

Seattle established control early, marching 65 yards on the game’s opening drive. Darnold capped the methodical possession with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tory Horton, giving the Seahawks a 7-0 lead with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter. That drive was a sign of things to come, as Darnold methodically dissected the Washington defense.

The second quarter was a 24-point onslaught that put the game out of reach. The Seahawks’ scoring barrage began when Darnold connected with Horton again, this time on a 25-yard deep strike down the right sideline to extend the lead to 14-0.

Just over two minutes later, after a Washington three-and-out, Darnold found tight end Elijah Arroyo for a 26-yard touchdown, pushing the advantage to 21-0.

The Seahawks were not done. Following another Commanders punt, Darnold unleashed a 60-yard touchdown bomb to Cody White, who streaked past the secondary to make the score 28-0. The scoring drive took just two plays.

Washington finally found a response just before halftime. Quarterback Jayden Daniels engineered a 10-play, 80-yard drive, which he finished himself with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 28-7.

Seattle, however, snuffed out any potential momentum by efficiently driving into field goal range in the final 49 seconds. Jason Myers nailed a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the half, sending the Seahawks into the locker room with a commanding 31-7 lead.

The Seahawks’ final touchdown came on a trick play in the third quarter. With the ball at the Washington 1-yard line, a direct snap went to tight end AJ Barner, who plunged into the end zone to make it 38-7.

Washington added a consolation score in the fourth quarter, with Chris Rodriguez Jr. powering in from 4 yards out to cap a 15-play, 65-yard drive for the final margin of 38-14.

Daniels finished 16 of 22 for 153 yards for Washington and added 51 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Rodriguez Jr. was a bright spot for the Commanders’ offense, rushing for 65 yards on 12 carries. Zach Ertz led Washington receivers with four catches for 46 yards.

For Seattle, Jaxon Smith-Njigba was Darnold’s primary target, hauling in eight passes for 129 yards. Horton’s two touchdown receptions highlighted the efficient passing attack.

Defensively, the Seahawks were led by linebacker Tyrice Knight, who recorded 10 tackles. Safety Ty Okada contributed five tackles and a critical second-quarter interception of Daniels that set up a Seattle touchdown. The Seahawks’ defense sacked Daniels four times.

The Commanders’ defense was led by safety Jeremy Reaves, who made nine tackles. Linebackers Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner, along with cornerback Trey Amos, each had seven tackles. Cornerback Mike Sainristil intercepted a Darnold pass in the third quarter.

The result was a stark reversal of pregame expectations. Washington had been installed as a 2.5-point favorite, and statistical models gave the Commanders a 57.6 percent probability to win. The combined score of 52 points went over the betting over/under line of 48.5.

The announced attendance was 64,197.

Seattle will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday. Washington will host the Detroit Lions next Sunday before traveling to Madrid to face the Miami Dolphins the following week.
