Minnesota at L.A. Chargers

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Interstat) — Justin Herbert accounted for three touchdowns and Kimani Vidal rushed for 117 yards and a score as the Los Angeles Chargers dominated the Minnesota Vikings 37-10 on Thursday night before a crowd of 71,094 at SoFi Stadium.

The Chargers, improving to 5-3, controlled the game from the outset, methodically building a lead while their defense consistently stifled the Vikings’ offense. Minnesota fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Herbert, the Chargers’ quarterback from Eugene, Oregon, was efficient and dynamic, completing 18 of 25 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. He also used his legs effectively, rushing seven times for 62 yards to keep drives alive. His primary targets were Ladd McConkey, who caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, and Oronde Gadsden II, who had five receptions for 77 yards and a score.

The Chargers’ ground game was equally potent, led by rookie running back Kimani Vidal from Marietta, Georgia. Vidal carried the ball 23 times for 117 yards and punched in a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Los Angeles opened the scoring on its first possession. After a promising Minnesota drive stalled, Herbert engineered a 13-play, 83-yard march, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Gadsden late in the first quarter.

The Chargers extended their lead in the second quarter. A 40-yard connection from Herbert to Gadsden set up Vidal’s touchdown run, making it 14-0. Minnesota responded with a 54-yard field goal from Will Reichard, but the Chargers answered just before halftime. Herbert led a two-minute drill, finishing it with a 27-yard touchdown strike to McConkey with 45 seconds left in the half to take a 21-3 lead into the break.

The Vikings showed a brief spark in the third quarter when safety Joshua Metellus intercepted a Herbert pass. The turnover led to Minnesota’s lone touchdown, a 4-yard pass from Carson Wentz to Jordan Addison. Reichard’s extra point cut the deficit to 24-10.

Any hope of a Minnesota comeback was extinguished early in the fourth quarter. The Chargers put the game out of reach with a methodical drive that ended with Herbert’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Tre’ Harris. Kicker Cameron Dicker added field goals of 34 and 45 yards in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Minnesota’s offense struggled throughout the night. Quarterback Carson Wentz, from Bismarck, North Dakota, completed 15 of 27 passes for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked six times by a relentless Chargers pass rush. Justin Jefferson was a bright spot for the Vikings, catching seven passes for 74 yards, but the team could not sustain drives.

The Chargers’ defense was swarming, with linebacker Blake Cashman of Minnesota leading all players with 11 tackles. The Los Angeles defensive front, however, was the story, generating consistent pressure. Odafe Oweh, Justin Eboigbe, Tuli Tuipulotu and Khalil Mack each recorded a sack. Safety RJ Mickens secured the game’s lone interception for the Chargers.

The Chargers next travel to face the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 2. The Vikings will visit the Detroit Lions on the same day.
