Chargers dominate Vikings behind Herbert’s 3 touchdowns

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Interstat) — Justin Herbert accounted for three touchdowns and the Los Angeles Chargers’ defense sacked Carson Wentz six times in a dominant 37-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium.

A crowd of 71,094 watched as the Chargers improved to 5-3, while the Vikings fell to 3-4.

Herbert, the quarterback from Eugene, Oregon, was efficient and explosive, completing 18 of 25 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns while adding 62 yards on seven scrambles. His favorite targets were rookie Ladd McConkey, who caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, and tight end Oronde Gadsden II, who hauled in five catches for 77 yards and a score.

The Chargers’ ground game was equally potent, led by rookie running back Kimani Vidal of Marietta, Georgia. Vidal gashed the Vikings defense for 117 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, consistently moving the chains and controlling the clock.

The game began with promise for the Vikings, as Myles Price of Dallas, Texas, returned the opening kickoff 46 yards to set up Minnesota near midfield. The drive ultimately stalled, however, setting a tone of missed opportunities for the visitors.

The Chargers responded with a methodical 13-play, 83-yard drive capped by Herbert’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Gadsden, giving Los Angeles a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Los Angeles extended its lead in the second quarter with a powerful display from its franchise quarterback. Herbert engineered a 69-yard drive that he finished with his legs, scrambling for gains of 18 and 6 yards before Vidal punched it in from 3 yards out for a 14-0 advantage.

Minnesota got on the board with a 54-yard field goal from Will Reichard of Hoover, Alabama, but the Chargers answered just before halftime. Herbert led a crisp two-minute drill, culminating in a 27-yard touchdown strike to McConkey with 45 seconds left in the half to push the lead to 21-3. Reichard missed a 53-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the half.

The Vikings showed a flicker of life in the third quarter when safety Joshua Metellus of Pembroke Pines, Florida, intercepted a Herbert pass intended for McConkey, returning it to the Los Angeles 22-yard line. Four plays later, Wentz connected with Jordan Addison of Frederick, Maryland, on a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 24-10.

Any momentum was short-lived. The Chargers marched right back down the field, with Vidal breaking off runs of 18 and 21 yards to set up Herbert’s third touchdown pass, a 6-yarder to Tre’ Harris of Lafayette, Louisiana, early in the fourth quarter to make it 31-10.

The Vikings’ next possession ended abruptly when Wentz’s deep pass for Justin Jefferson was intercepted by safety RJ Mickens of Southlake, Texas. The Chargers turned that takeaway into a 34-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker of Austin, Texas. Dicker added another 45-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining to provide the final margin.

Dicker finished the game 3 for 4 on field goal attempts.

Wentz, the quarterback from Bismarck, North Dakota, struggled under constant pressure, completing 15 of 27 passes for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jefferson of Saint Rose, Louisiana, was his primary target, catching seven passes for 74 yards.

The Chargers’ defensive front was relentless. Odafe Oweh of Howell, New Jersey, Justin Eboigbe of Forest Park, Georgia, Tuli Tuipulotu of Hawthorne, California, and Khalil Mack of Fort Pierce, Florida, each recorded a sack. The unit held Minnesota’s rushing attack to just 33 yards.

Linebacker Blake Cashman of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, led all defenders with 11 tackles in a losing effort for the Vikings.

The final score of 47 points fell under the betting over/under line of 44.5. The Chargers, who had been installed as 3.5-point favorites, outperformed the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 31-24 victory and their pregame ELO win probability of 55.60 percent.

The Vikings travel to face the Detroit Lions in their next game on Sunday, Nov. 2. The Chargers will be on the road the same day to take on the Tennessee Titans.
