Falcons Ground Bills Behind Robinson’s Big Night, Improve to 3‑2

ATLANTA (Interstat) — In a stunning Monday night upset that defied statistical projections, the Atlanta Falcons rode a historic performance from running back Bijan Robinson and a stifling defensive effort to a 24-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills at a raucous Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

A crowd of 72,067 watched as the Falcons, installed as 3.5-point favorites but given only a 16.8 percent probability to win by Interstat’s ELO system, controlled the game from the second quarter onward. The win improved Atlanta’s record to 3-2, while the Bills, who entered with an 83.2 percent win probability, fell to 4-2.

The story of the game was the utter dominance of the Falcons’ ground attack, spearheaded by Robinson. The third-year back from Tucson, Arizona, was virtually unstoppable, amassing 238 total yards. He rushed 19 times for 170 yards and a touchdown, adding six receptions for 68 yards. His signature moment came late in the second quarter when he broke free for an 81-yard touchdown run, a back-breaking play that gave Atlanta a 21-14 lead it would not relinquish.

Atlanta’s defense, which entered the game with a league-low three sacks, harassed Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen all evening, registering four sacks and forcing two critical turnovers. The unit held a Buffalo offense that had averaged over 30 points per game to just two touchdowns.

The game began at a frantic pace, with both teams finding the end zone on their opening possessions. The Falcons struck first, capping a methodical 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run by Tyler Allgeier. Buffalo answered immediately, with Allen orchestrating a 73-yard drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dawson Knox, tying the score at 7-7.

The first quarter fireworks continued as Atlanta marched right back down the field. Robinson was the catalyst, ripping off a 22-yard run to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to Drake London, knotting the score at 14-14 as the period ended.

Penix, a Tampa, Florida, native, managed the game efficiently, completing 20 of 32 passes for 250 yards and the one touchdown to London, who finished with a monster stat line of 10 receptions for 158 yards.

The momentum shifted decisively in Atlanta’s favor with Robinson’s 81-yard sprint to the end zone with 11:09 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Falcons a 21-14 halftime lead. The Bills had a chance to tie or take the lead just before the break, driving into Atlanta territory, but cornerback Dee Alford intercepted an Allen pass intended for Khalil Shakir at the Buffalo 49 to snuff out the threat.

Buffalo’s only score of the second half came on their first possession of the third quarter. Allen, who finished 15 of 26 for 180 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while also rushing for 42 yards, connected with running back Ray Davis on a 16-yard scoring pass to pull the Bills within 21-14.

From that point forward, the Atlanta defense took over. The Bills’ next five possessions resulted in four punts and a turnover on downs, as the Falcons’ pass rush, led by sacks from Sam Roberts, David Onyemata, and Ruke Orhorhoro, consistently collapsed the pocket. Allen was sacked three times in the second half.

Buffalo’s final hope evaporated in the closing minutes. After a 33-yard field goal from Parker Romo extended Atlanta’s lead to 24-14 with 1:43 left, Allen drove the Bills from their own 30 to the Atlanta 16 in just 46 seconds. On first down, his pass into the end zone was intercepted by Falcons linebacker DeAngelo Malone, sealing the victory with 41 seconds remaining.

The Falcons’ defensive effort was a collective swarm, with Alford recording a team-high seven tackles to go with his interception and a sack. Linebacker Divine Deablo and safeties Xavier Watts and Jessie Bates III each added five tackles. For Buffalo, linebacker Shaq Thompson was a bright spot on a tough night for the defense, registering 10 total tackles.

The Falcons will look to build on this statement win when they travel to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, October 19. The Bills, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped, enter their bye week before facing the Carolina Panthers on the road October 26.
