Yakult at SoftBank
FUKUOKA, Japan (Interstat) — The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks aim to clinch their weekend series against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows on Sunday evening at Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome.
SoftBank enters the contest with a 37-26 record, while Yakult sits at 33-29-1. The teams split the first two games of the series, with the Hawks winning 8-1 on Saturday after the Swallows took the opener 4-2 on Friday.
The pitching matchup features a rematch of Saturday’s starters. Yakult right-hander Taichi Yamano (5.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 7 K in Saturday’s loss) will try to rebound against a SoftBank lineup that tagged him for five earned runs. Yamano had been sharp in his previous two starts, allowing one earned run in a complete-game loss against Nippon-Ham on June 5 and one earned run over six-plus innings in a win at Rakuten on May 29.
SoftBank counters with left-hander Yugo Maeda, who earned the win Saturday by holding Yakult to one earned run on three hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Maeda has been dominant recently, allowing three earned runs combined over his last three starts covering 15 innings, with 15 strikeouts. He also threw five scoreless innings against Nippon-Ham on May 24.
The Hawks offense was powered Saturday by shortstop Isami Nomura, who went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Right fielder Yasutaka Shiomi homered for Yakult in the loss.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-2 SoftBank victory, giving the Hawks a 68.30% win probability.
Following Sunday’s game, Yakult returns home for a three-game series against Hiroshima beginning June 19. SoftBank travels to Hokkaido for a three-game set against Nippon-Ham starting June 19.
