Spurs Take 3‑1 Series Lead Over Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — Victor Wembanyama returned from a concussion and delivered a dominant performance, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 114-93 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 Defensive Player of the Year, finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks in 34 minutes after clearing the league’s concussion protocol about an hour before tipoff. De’Aaron Fox added 28 points, six rebounds and seven assists for the Spurs, who will host Game 5 on Tuesday afternoon with a chance to close out the series.

The Spurs trailed by 17 points at halftime, 58-41, after a sluggish first half in which they shot just 41 percent from the field and committed seven turnovers. Portland’s Deni Avdija scored 14 points in the second quarter alone, and Jrue Holiday added 11 as the Trail Blazers built their largest lead of the game.

San Antonio flipped the game in the third quarter, outscoring Portland 33-16 behind a furious defensive effort. Wembanyama anchored the defense with four blocks in the period, altering numerous shots and igniting fast breaks. Fox scored 10 points in the quarter, including a step-back 3-pointer that gave the Spurs their first lead since the opening minutes. Devin Vassell contributed eight points in the quarter, and Stephon Castle added a 3-pointer and an alley-oop assist to Wembanyama.

The Spurs carried a 74-74 tie into the fourth quarter, then seized control with a 17-2 run over the first 4 1/2 minutes. Fox opened the period with a driving layup, and Wembanyama threw down two alley-oop dunks off feeds from Castle. Keldon Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer and a dunk during the burst, and Fox added another step-back 3 to push San Antonio’s lead to 93-77 with 4:48 remaining.

Portland never got closer than nine points the rest of the way. The Spurs shot 12 of 18 from the field in the fourth quarter and made all six of their free throws. Wembanyama recorded three more blocks in the final period, finishing with seven total, and Fox scored 10 points in the quarter.

Avdija led Portland with 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists, but shot 7 of 18 from the floor. Holiday added 20 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jerami Grant scored 17 points, and Toumani Camara had eight points and five rebounds. The Trail Blazers committed 18 turnovers, leading to 22 San Antonio points.

San Antonio shot 14 of 33 from 3-point range and 14 of 17 from the foul line, while holding Portland to 10 of 31 from deep. The Spurs outrebounded Portland 46-39 and recorded 12 steals and 10 blocks. Portland had six steals and five blocks.

The victory improved San Antonio’s season record to 65-22, while Portland fell to 44-43. The Spurs have won four of the five meetings between the teams this season, including three at Moda Center.

Wembanyama’s return was a significant boost for San Antonio after he missed the previous game, a 106-103 loss in Game 3. In his first game back, he showed no signs of rust, altering shots from the opening tip and finishing with a game-high plus-minus of plus-24.

Fox shot 11 of 21 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range, and committed three turnovers in 39 minutes. Castle, the rookie guard, contributed 16 points, eight assists and one rebound in 26 minutes off the bench, shooting 6 of 12 from the floor. Vassell added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Julian Champagnie scored eight points, and Keldon Johnson added eight points in 19 minutes.

For Portland, Avdija scored 26 points on 7-of-18 shooting, making 9 of 10 free throws. Holiday shot 6 of 14 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range. Grant shot 6 of 12 and grabbed five rebounds. Robert Williams had four points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Camara finished with eight points and five rebounds.

The game drew a crowd of 19,717 at Moda Center.

San Antonio’s third-quarter turnaround was fueled by a 10-0 run midway through the period. After Portland’s Robert Williams dunked to give the Trail Blazers a 65-58 lead, the Spurs responded with a 13-2 burst. Vassell hit a 3-pointer, Fox drove for a layup, and Castle knocked down a 3 from the wing. Wembanyama then threw down an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Castle, and Fox added another 3 to give San Antonio a 71-67 lead. The Spurs never trailed again.

Wembanyama recorded his seventh block with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter, swatting Avdija’s layup attempt to preserve the double-digit lead. He finished one block short of his playoff career high.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Portland 121, San Antonio 117, but the Spurs’ dominant second half made that projection irrelevant. Interstat’s ELO system had given San Antonio a 68.30 percent probability to win before the game. The Spurs were installed as a 5.5-point favorite and covered the spread easily. The total score of 207 went over the over-under line of 219.
