Wembanyama Powers Spurs to Dominant Victory Over Mavericks

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Victor Wembanyama scored 40 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a dominant 26-minute performance, and the San Antonio Spurs cruised to a 139-120 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night at Frost Bank Center.

The win improved the Spurs to 62-20, solidifying their elite status, while the Mavericks fell to 25-56, having lost 11 of their last 13 games. A crowd of 18,681 watched as San Antonio led wire-to-wire, never allowing Dallas to mount a serious challenge.

The most important part of the game was its opening sequence, which set an immediate and decisive tone. The Spurs, led by Wembanyama, exploded out of the gate with a 15-2 run in the first four minutes. The French phenom was unstoppable early, scoring 11 of San Antonio’s first 15 points on a mix of powerful dunks and a step-back three-pointer. His early flurry, combined with stifling defense that forced Dallas into rushed and missed shots, buried the Mavericks in a deep hole from which they never recovered. The Spurs’ 37-point first quarter established a commanding 11-point lead that only grew as the game progressed.

Wembanyama’s efficient masterpiece included five assists and two blocks, showcasing his all-around impact. He shot 12 of 19 from the field and a perfect 12 of 12 from the free-throw line. His performance continued a torrid stretch, following games of 41, 41, 34, and 17 points in his last four outings.

Rookie forward Cooper Flagg led Dallas with 33 points, six rebounds and five assists, providing a bright spot in a difficult season. De’Aaron Fox orchestrated the San Antonio offense with 18 points and 10 assists. Keldon Johnson added 17 points off the bench, while Julian Champagnie contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Spurs’ offensive execution was clinical. They shot 54.3% from the field and a remarkable 96.3% from the foul line, making 26 of 27 attempts. Their offensive rating of 136.5 per 100 possessions dwarfed Dallas’s mark of 120.0. Despite committing 10 turnovers to Dallas’s seven, San Antonio’s superior shooting and playmaking, evidenced by their 28 assists to the Mavericks’ 17, rendered the margin irrelevant.

Dallas, which shot 45.9% from the field, found moments of rhythm, particularly from Flagg and Khris Middleton, who scored 14 points. However, they could not string together enough stops to cut meaningfully into the deficit. San Antonio answered every Mavericks push, most notably with a 40-point third quarter that extended their lead to 108-94 entering the final period.

The game was a stark contrast in team trajectories. The Spurs, a powerhouse all season, methodically dispatched an overmatched opponent, while the Mavericks’ struggles continued in a season defined by inconsistency. San Antonio swept the three-game season series from Dallas.

The Spurs will host the Denver Nuggets on Sunday in a potential playoff preview. The Mavericks return home to face the Chicago Bulls, also on Sunday.

The final score easily surpassed the pregame over/under line of 236.5. San Antonio entered the game as a heavy 17-point favorite, a spread they covered with ease, aligning with statistical models that gave them a 97.6% probability to win.
