Marlins Edge Rockies 2‑1 in Season Opener Behind Alcantara’s Strong Start

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a crisp, two-hour and twenty-six-minute pitchers’ duel that defied pregame projections, the Miami Marlins edged the Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Friday night at loanDepot Park to open the 2026 Major League Baseball season before a crowd of 32,459.

The contest, anticipated as a higher-scoring affair with a projected total of seven runs, was instead dominated by starting pitching and timely defensive plays, culminating in a tense ninth-inning finish.

Miami ace Sandy Alcantara earned the win, delivering six strong innings of one-run ball. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out four, effectively working around traffic to keep the Rockies at bay. His counterpart, Colorado’s Kyle Freeland, was saddled with the loss despite a quality start. Freeland allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, walking two and striking out two.

The game’s decisive momentum swung in the bottom of the second inning. After a quiet first, Miami’s Xavier Edwards ignited the rally with a one-out single to center. Rookie Owen Caissie followed by lacing a double to the gap in center field, scoring Edwards easily to tie the game. The next batter, Javier Sanoja, continued his productive night by grounding a single through the left side, allowing Caissie to race home with what proved to be the winning run.

Colorado’s lone response came in the fourth, capitalizing on a Miami mistake. Jake McCarthy led off with a bunt single and Hunter Goodman followed with a single to right. McCarthy was thrown out at the plate on a strong relay from right fielder Austin Slater to catcher Agustín Ramírez. After a force out, Willi Castro stood on first with two outs. Ezequiel Tovar then reached on a fielding error by Sanoja at third, extending the inning. A walk to TJ Rumfield loaded the bases for Jordan Beck, who delivered a clutch, two-out infield single to shortstop, scoring Castro. Alcantara limited the damage by striking out Brenton Doyle to end the threat with the bases loaded, preserving a 2-1 Marlins lead.

From there, the bullpens took over. The Marlins’ quartet of Andrew Nardi, Anthony Bender, Jimmy Herget and Pete Fairbanks combined for three scoreless innings of one-hit relief. Fairbanks navigated a minor scare in the ninth for the save. After striking out Ezequiel Tovar, he allowed a two-out single to TJ Rumfield, bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate in Jordan Beck. Beck, however, popped out to second baseman Xavier Edwards, and Brenton Doyle lined out sharply to shortstop Otto Lopez to end the game.

The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the top of the eighth inning, with the Marlins clinging to their one-run lead. Reliever Jimmy Herget, after recording the first out, allowed a single to Kyle Karros and a subsequent line-drive single to Hunter Goodman, moving the tying run to third base with only one out. Miami manager summoned left-hander Brennan Bernardino to face the switch-hitting Willi Castro. In a high-leverage confrontation, Bernardino won the battle, striking out Castro swinging on a sharp slider for the second out. Pete Fairbanks then entered and, after falling behind 3-0 to pinch-hitter Braxton Fulford, battled back to strike him out looking on a full-count fastball at the knees. This escape act, stranding runners on the corners, was the defensive stand that ultimately secured the victory for Miami.

Sanoja led the Marlins’ eight-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Edwards and Caissie each had a hit and a run scored. For the Rockies, who collected seven hits, Goodman and Rumfield each had two hits.

With the victory, the Marlins begin the season 1-0, while the Rockies start 0-1. The two teams continue their opening series Saturday and Sunday in Miami.

The Rockies will continue a season-opening road trip with three games in Toronto against the Blue Jays beginning Monday before hosting the Philadelphia Phillies for their home opener next Friday. The Marlins will finish the series with Colorado before welcoming the Chicago White Sox for a three-game set starting Monday. A challenging early road trip to face the New York Yankees awaits next weekend.
