Blue Jays Pound Mariners 13‑4 to Stave Off Playoff Elimination
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Facing elimination and a daunting deficit in their American League playoff series, the Toronto Blue Jays unleashed an offensive barrage for the ages Wednesday night, pounding the Seattle Mariners 13-4 at a stunned T-Mobile Park.
The victory, powered by an 18-hit attack that included five home runs, allowed the Blue Jays to stave off a sweep and cut the Mariners’ series lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven set. A crowd of 46,471 watched as Toronto transformed a must-win game into a lopsided affair, scoring in five separate innings to back a dominant pitching performance from starter Shane Bieber.
The Mariners struck first, capitalizing on early energy from their home crowd. After a leadoff walk to Randy Arozarena in the bottom of the first inning, superstar Julio Rodríguez launched a two-run homer to left field off Bieber, giving Seattle a quick 2-0 advantage.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the Blue Jays’ offense erupted in the third inning against Seattle starter and losing pitcher George Kirby. The onslaught began with a double from Ernie Clement and a two-run homer to right-center field by shortstop Andrés Giménez, immediately tying the game. The Blue Jays were far from finished. Nathan Lukes and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with back-to-back singles, and after an out, Alejandro Kirk worked a walk to load the bases. Daulton Varsho then cleared them with a ringing double down the right-field line, scoring two more runs to cap a five-run inning and seize a 5-2 lead.
Toronto continued to add on, demonstrating a relentless approach at the plate. George Springer led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field, his third of the postseason. An inning later, Guerrero Jr. added to the lead with a mammoth solo shot of his own, his fourth, making it 7-2.
The game was blown wide open in the sixth. After a run scored on a groundout, the Mariners opted to intentionally walk the red-hot Guerrero Jr. to load the bases with two outs. The strategy backfired spectacularly when catcher Alejandro Kirk demolished a 2-0 offering from reliever Caleb Ferguson for a grand slam to right field, extending the Toronto lead to 12-2 and silencing the Seattle faithful.
The Mariners scraped across two consolation runs in the eighth inning on back-to-back solo home runs from Arozarena and Cal Raleigh, but Toronto answered in the ninth when Addison Barger hit a solo homer to complete the scoring.
While the offense captured headlines, the victory was anchored by Bieber. The winning pitcher shook off Rodríguez’s first-inning homer to deliver a masterful performance, tossing six strong innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. He struck out eight Mariners and walked only one, effectively quieting a potent Seattle lineup after the initial outburst. Braydon Fisher contributed a scoreless inning of relief.
Kirby, saddled with the loss for Seattle, was battered for eight runs on nine hits over four-plus innings. His season record fell to 10-9. The Toronto bullpen, aside from the two solo homers in the eighth, kept the Mariners in check to secure the vital win.
Guerrero Jr. was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, two singles, a walk and three runs scored. Kirk’s grand slam was the defining blow, finishing his night with three RBIs. Giménez, Springer and Varsho each recorded multiple hits and RBIs as the Blue Jays’ lineup proved unstoppable.
The series is set to continue Thursday at T-Mobile Park, where the Blue Jays will look to build on their newfound momentum and level the series, while the Mariners will attempt to regroup and reclaim control of the matchup on their home field.
