Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — Javier Báez launched a three-run homer and drove in four runs, powering the Detroit Tigers to a 9-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park, evening their American League Division Series at two games apiece.
A crowd of 37,069 watched as the Tigers’ offense erupted for 13 hits, breaking open a tight game with a four-run sixth inning to overcome an early deficit and force a decisive Game 5 in Seattle.
The Mariners struck first, scratching out single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to build a 3-0 lead. Josh Naylor scored Seattle’s first run on a Dominic Canzone single in the second. Naylor crossed the plate again in the fourth on a double-play groundout, and Randy Arozarena came home on a Cal Raleigh single in the fifth.
Seattle starter Bryce Miller held the Tigers scoreless through four innings, but Detroit’s lineup came alive in the fifth. Trailing 3-0, the Tigers rallied to tie the game. Zach McKinstry scored on a Dillon Dingler double, Dingler came home on a Jahmai Jones pinch-hit double, and Jones tied the game when Báez singled him home.
The tie was short-lived. In the bottom of the sixth, Riley Greene led off with a solo home run to right-center field, giving Detroit its first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. The Tigers were far from finished. Spencer Torkelson doubled and scored on a McKinstry single. Later in the inning, with a runner on, Báez delivered the decisive blow, launching a line-drive, two-run homer to left field to extend the lead to 7-3.
Detroit added insurance runs in the seventh on a solo home run by Gleyber Torres and in the eighth when Báez grounded into a force out that allowed McKinstry to score.
The Tigers’ bullpen was dominant, combining for five innings of one-run ball after starter Casey Mize allowed two runs on two hits over three innings. Troy Melton earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings of relief and allowing just two hits while striking out three. Will Vest and Luke Jackson each contributed a scoreless inning of relief for their respective teams.
Gabe Speier, who entered the game in the fifth inning for Seattle, was charged with the loss after allowing the hit to Báez that gave Detroit the lead for good.
The Mariners managed eight hits but went 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position and grounded into three double plays, stymieing multiple scoring opportunities.
With the series tied 2-2, the teams will travel to Seattle for Game 5 on Friday. The winner will advance to the American League Championship Series.
