Mariners Rally Past Tigers to Even Playoff Series

SEATTLE (Interstat) — In a taut, low-scoring affair defined by dominant pitching and a dramatic late-inning rally, the Seattle Mariners evened their American League Division Series with the Detroit Tigers, securing a 3-2 victory in Game 2 on Sunday at a sold-out T-Mobile Park.

A crowd of 47,371 watched as the Mariners, held to just two runs through seven innings, answered a two-run Detroit rally in the top of the eighth with a game-winning run in the bottom half of the frame. The best-of-five series is now tied 1-1 as it shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Tuesday.

The game was a stark contrast to the pregame projections, which heavily favored a high-scoring affair with Seattle as a slight favorite. Instead, it became a tense pitchers’ duel for much of the afternoon, with Seattle’s Luis Castillo and Detroit’s Tarik Skubal setting the tone.

Skubal was brilliant for the Tigers, delivering a performance worthy of a playoff victory. The left-hander worked seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out nine. The only damage against him came via two solo home runs from Seattle second baseman Jorge Polanco.

Castillo was equally effective for the Mariners, stifling a Detroit offense that had mustered only three hits in the game. Over 4 2/3 innings, Castillo allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out three, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard entirely before handing the game over to a parade of Seattle relievers.

The scoring began in the fourth inning when Polanco broke the scoreless tie, driving a line drive over the left-center field wall for his first home run of the postseason.

Polanco struck again in the sixth inning, this time launching a fly ball that cleared the left field fence to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. The two homers accounted for all of Seattle’s offense through the first seven innings.

For seven innings, the Tigers’ offense was virtually nonexistent, managing only a single hit and failing to advance a runner past second base. That changed abruptly in the top of the eighth against Seattle reliever Matt Brash.

Gleyber Torres worked a leadoff walk to bring the tying run to the plate. After Kerry Carpenter struck out, Riley Greene reached on a fielder’s choice, with Torres advancing to second on a fielding error by first baseman Josh Naylor. That set the stage for Spencer Torkelson, who laced a double down the right field line, clearing the bases and stunning the home crowd as both Torres and Greene raced home to tie the game at 2-2.

The jubilation for the Tigers was short-lived. In the bottom of the eighth, Detroit reliever Kyle Finnegan, who took the loss, surrendered a one-out double to Cal Raleigh. Julio Rodríguez followed by slicing a double of his own down the left field line, easily scoring Raleigh from second to put the Mariners back in front, 3-2.

Seattle threatened for more, loading the bases later in the inning, but Brant Hurter, who replaced Finnegan, induced an inning-ending pop-out to escape further damage.

In the ninth, Seattle turned to its All-Star closer, Andrés Muñoz. The right-hander needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in order, securing the save and locking down the series-tying victory for the Mariners.

Brash, despite allowing the two-run double to Torkelson, was credited with the win. Finnegan was charged with the loss for Detroit.

The Mariners’ bullpen, a strength all season, was instrumental in the victory. After Castillo’s departure, Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier, Brash and Muñoz combined to allow just one run on two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven Tigers batters.

With the series now deadlocked, the scene shifts to Comerica Park in Detroit for Game 3 on Tuesday. The Tigers will look to reclaim home-field advantage, while the Mariners will aim to build on the momentum from their resilient comeback victory.
