New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays
TORONTO (Interstat) — Rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage authored a historic postseason debut, striking out 11 over 5 1/3 no-hit innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays’ offense exploded for a second straight game, pounding the New York Yankees 13-7 on Sunday afternoon to take a commanding 2-0 lead in their American League Division Series.
A sold-out crowd of 44,764 at Rogers Centre watched as the 21-year-old Yesavage dominated the Yankees’ lineup, setting a Blue Jays postseason record for strikeouts. He walked one and did not allow a hit before being lifted after 89 pitches. The Yankees did not record their first hit until Aaron Judge’s single off reliever Justin Bruihl with one out in the sixth inning.
Yesavage’s brilliance was backed by a relentless Blue Jays attack that racked up 15 hits, including five home runs. Toronto has now scored 23 runs on 29 hits through the first two games of the series.
The Blue Jays broke a scoreless tie in the second inning. Daulton Varsho led off with a double and advanced to third on an error by Judge in right field. Ernie Clement followed by launching a two-run homer to left field off Yankees starter and losing pitcher Max Fried.
Toronto extended its lead with a three-run third inning. A run scored on an Alejandro Kirk groundout before Varsho laced an RBI double and Clement followed with a run-scoring single to make it 5-0.
The floodgates opened in the fourth inning. After Fried loaded the bases with two walks and a single, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. crushed a 1-1 fastball deep to left field for a grand slam, the first in Blue Jays postseason history. Two batters later, Varsho connected for a two-run homer to cap a six-run inning that put Toronto ahead 11-0.
George Springer added a solo shot in the fifth inning, and Varsho launched his second homer of the game, another solo blast, in the sixth.
The Yankees, held hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings, finally broke through against Toronto’s bullpen. Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, and the Yankees mounted a serious threat in the seventh, scoring five runs on six hits. Bellinger added a sacrifice fly and Giancarlo Stanton delivered a two-run single in the frame to pull New York to 13-7.
The Yankees’ comeback bid stalled there, however, as the Blue Jays bullpen combination of Mason Fluharty, Louis Varland and Seranthony Domínguez shut the door over the final three innings, allowing no hits.
Yesavage earned the win, improving to 2-0. Fried, who entered the game with a 19-6 record, took the loss after being charged with nine runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Varsho led the Blue Jays’ offensive onslaught, going 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and four runs scored. Clement went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, while Guerrero Jr. finished 3 for 5 with his historic grand slam and four RBIs.
For the Yankees, Bellinger drove in three runs, while Stanton and Ben Rice each had two hits in the losing effort.
The series now shifts to New York for Game 3 on Tuesday. The Yankees, who fell to 96-71, must win to keep their season alive. The Blue Jays, also 96-68, are one victory away from advancing to the American League Championship Series.
