Chi. Cubs 3, at Milwaukee 9

Saturday, October 4, 2025 · Final · Championship Series Game 1 (MIL leads 1-0)

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Jackson Chourio went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs in the first two innings before departing with a hamstring injury as the Milwaukee Brewers trounced the Chicago Cubs 9-3 in their NL Division Series opener Saturday afternoon at a sold-out American Family Field.

A crowd of 42,678 watched the Brewers seize a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series, with Game 2 scheduled for Monday in Milwaukee.

The game turned dramatically in a chaotic first inning. The Cubs struck first when Michael Busch launched a two-run homer off Freddy Peralta in the top of the frame. But the Brewers responded with a six-run onslaught in the bottom half, chasing Chicago starter Matthew Boyd after he recorded just one out.

Milwaukee sent 11 batters to the plate, capitalizing on a costly error by Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner. The inning was capped by Chourio’s two-run single that gave the Brewers a 6-2 lead. Chourio, however, injured his right hamstring beating out a bases-loaded infield single on the play and was removed from the game. He became the first player to record three hits in the first two innings of a postseason game.

The Brewers weren’t done, adding three more runs in the second inning. Caleb Durbin delivered a two-run single, and Chourio’s replacement, Isaac Collins, scored on another infield single from Chourio’s replacement in the lineup, though the run was charged to the injured outfielder’s stat line.

Peralta settled in after the rocky first inning, earning the win by pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine. The Cubs managed just six hits total.

The Cubs’ bullpen, led by Aaron Civale, stopped the bleeding. Civale provided 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and striking out three after replacing the ineffective Boyd, who took the loss.

Chicago scratched out single runs in the sixth and eighth innings on solo home runs from Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner, but it was far too little against the Brewers’ offensive explosion and a lockdown effort from their bullpen. Milwaukee relievers Aaron Ashby, Nick Mears and Jared Koenig combined to allow just one run over the final 3 1/3 innings.

William Contreras added two hits and an RBI for the Brewers, who improved to 98-65. The Cubs fell to 94-72.
