Yankees Blank Red Sox Behind Schlittler’s Gem to Even Playoff Series

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a masterclass of postseason pitching, Cam Schlittler authored a dominant performance, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

The win, delivered before a charged sellout crowd of 48,833, knotted the American League Division Series at one game apiece as the teams head into a pivotal Game 4.

Schlittler was the story, silencing a Red Sox lineup that had mustered just five hits. The right-hander was nearly untouchable over eight sterling innings, striking out 12 batters while walking none and scattering five singles. He methodically dismantled Boston’s offense, never allowing a runner to reach third base.

The game was a tense, scoreless pitcher’s duel through three innings between Schlittler and Boston starter Connelly Early. Early, who took the loss to fall to 1-3, matched zeros early, striking out six Yankees through the first three frames. But the dam broke decisively in the bottom of the fourth.

The Yankees’ offensive outburst began with a Cody Bellinger double that caromed off the glove of Boston center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. After a walk to Giancarlo Stanton and a strikeout, Amed Rosario broke the deadlock with a sharp RBI single to left field, plating Bellinger.

The inning continued to unravel for Boston and Early. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a single to load the bases, and Anthony Volpe delivered another run-scoring single to make it 2-0. The knockout blow came from an unlikely source. With the bases still loaded, Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit a routine ground ball to first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, who bobbled the ball for a critical error. The miscue allowed two more runs to score, capping a four-run inning that was more than enough for Schlittler.

From there, Schlittler was in complete command. The Red Sox managed a pair of two-out singles in the fifth inning, but Schlittler stranded both runners by striking out Jarren Duran. Boston never seriously threatened again against the Yankees’ ace.

The Red Sox bullpen, after the short start from Early, provided admirable work to keep the game within reach. Justin Slaten, Aroldis Chapman, Greg Weissert and Steven Matz combined for 4 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, striking out five. Chapman, in particular, was electric in his one inning of work, striking out the side.

Their efforts, however, were rendered moot by Schlittler’s brilliance and the Yankees’ four-run fourth.

David Bednar closed out the game for New York with a perfect ninth inning, securing the win and ensuring the series will extend at least one more game.

The result pushes both teams to a critical juncture in the best-of-five series. After splitting the first two games in the Bronx, the series now sits at 1-1, with Game 3 scheduled for Fenway Park in Boston. The Yankees improved their season record to 96-69 with the victory, while the Red Sox fell to 90-75.

The game defied pregame projections from Interstat, which had forecast a high-scoring affair with a final score of 7-6 in favor of New York. Instead, Schlittler’s gem and a single productive inning from the Yankees’ offense resulted in a 4-0 final that easily stayed under the over/under line of 7.5. The Yankees, who were installed as 1.5-run favorites, covered the spread with the four-run margin of victory.
