Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a tense, low-scoring affair defined by dominant pitching and a late offensive spark, the Boston Red Sox seized home-field advantage with a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of their American League Division Series on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

A crowd of 47,027 watched as the visiting Red Sox, defying pregame projections that heavily favored the Yankees, rode a masterful performance from starter Garrett Crochet and a clutch, two-run single from pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

The game was a classic postseason pitcher’s duel for six innings. Yankees starter Max Fried was brilliant, holding the Red Sox scoreless on four hits while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings. His counterpart, Crochet, was even more formidable. The Red Sox left-hander overpowered the Yankees’ lineup, striking out 11 while allowing just one run on four hits across 7 2/3 innings.

The game’s only offense through the first six frames came from Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who launched a solo home run to right field off Crochet in the bottom of the second inning to give New York an early 1-0 lead.

That slim margin held until the top of the seventh. After Fried recorded the first out, he walked Ceddanne Rafaela and allowed a double to Nick Sogard, putting runners on second and third. Yankees manager Aaron Boone turned to his bullpen, bringing in Luke Weaver. Boston manager Alex Cora countered by sending Yoshida to the plate to pinch-hit.

The move paid immediate dividends. Yoshida lined Weaver’s first pitch into center field, scoring both Rafaela and Sogard to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. The hit electrified the Boston contingent in the stadium and silenced the home crowd.

Boston added a critical insurance run in the top of the ninth against Yankees reliever David Bednar. Trevor Story singled with two outs and came around to score on a sharp line-drive double by Alex Bregman, extending the lead to 3-1.

The Yankees mounted a serious threat in the bottom of the ninth against Boston closer Aroldis Chapman. Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger hit three consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out, bringing the winning run to the plate.

However, Chapman escaped the jam unscathed. He struck out Giancarlo Stanton swinging, got Jazz Chisholm Jr. to fly out to shallow right field, and then struck out Trent Grisham on a foul tip to end the game, securing the save and the victory.

Crochet earned the win, improving his record to 19-5. Weaver was tagged with the loss, falling to 4-5. Chapman’s save was his 33rd of the season.

The Red Sox finished with eight hits to the Yankees’ seven. The teams will resume the series Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, with Boston looking to take a commanding 2-0 series lead back to Fenway Park.
