Canzone homers twice as Mariners edge Dodgers 7‑6
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Dominic Canzone homered twice, including a tiebreaking two-run shot in the eighth inning, and the Seattle Mariners held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
Canzone finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs, both home runs coming in his final two at-bats. He connected for a solo homer in the sixth inning to tie the score at 5, then delivered the decisive blow in the eighth after Julio Rodríguez led off with a single. Canzone drove a 1-1 pitch from Brock Stewart deep to center field for his 18th homer of the season, giving Seattle a 7-5 lead.
The Dodgers mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth against Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz. Dalton Rushing singled and Shohei Ohtani followed with a double to right field that scored Rushing and cut the deficit to 7-6. Ohtani advanced to third on a fielding error by right fielder Victor Robles, but Muñoz struck out Andy Pages, got Freddie Freeman on a groundout, walked Max Muncy and then induced a game-ending groundout from Mookie Betts. Muñoz earned his 19th save.
Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 53-55. The Dodgers, who own the best record in the National League at 67-40, had won four of their previous five.
José A. Ferrer (4-1) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning despite allowing a runner on a throwing error. He entered after starter Luis Castillo lasted six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Stewart (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run on one hit over 1⅓ innings.
Ohtani led the Dodgers with a 3-for-4 performance that included a first-inning solo homer, his 23rd of the year, and a ninth-inning double. He drove in three runs. Max Muncy added a solo homer in the fifth, his 21st.
Seattle jumped ahead early. Cal Raleigh tied the game at 1 with a solo homer in the second inning. In the fourth, Rodríguez homered to left to make it 2-2, and Rob Refsnyder followed with a two-run homer that gave Seattle a 4-2 lead. Refsnyder finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice to tie the game at 4. Tommy Edman doubled in Betts, and Ohtani singled home Edman. Muncy’s homer in the fifth put Los Angeles ahead 5-4 before Canzone’s tying blast in the sixth.
Seattle’s bullpen held the Dodgers scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Gabe Speier pitched a scoreless sixth with one strikeout, and Eduard Bazardo tossed a perfect seventh.
The game lasted 2 hours, 39 minutes in front of 51,686 fans.
Seattle had 10 hits, while Los Angeles collected 13. The Mariners left nine runners on base, the Dodgers stranded 11.
Canzone’s performance continued a strong stretch. In his previous three games at Texas, he went 1 for 4, 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs, and 0 for 4. He also had a two-RBI game at Texas on July 24.
Seattle entered the game after dropping three of four to the Rangers, including a 3-7 loss Monday. The Mariners had lost five of their previous seven overall. They will face the Dodgers again Wednesday and Thursday before returning home for a six-game homestand against Minnesota and Detroit.
Los Angeles came off a series win at New York, taking two of three from the Mets. The Dodgers then travel to face the Boston Red Sox for three games starting Friday before heading to Chicago and Arizona.
The best play of the game came in the top of the eighth. With the score tied 5-5, Rodríguez singled off Stewart. Canzone then crushed a 94-mph fastball over the center-field wall, putting the Mariners ahead for good. Canzone’s first homer had come in the sixth on a 2-2 changeup from starter Justin Wrobleksi, who allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings.
The loss marked a rare stumble for the Dodgers at home. They had won six of their previous seven at Dodger Stadium.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Los Angeles 6, Seattle 5, and its ELO system gave the Dodgers a 66.2 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total runs of 13 went over the over-under line of 9.5.
