Devers powers Giants past Angels 9‑2
SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants rode a pair of big innings to a 9-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday evening at Oracle Park, claiming the first two games of their three-game interleague series.
Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Jung Hoo Lee added a 2-for-3 afternoon that included a three-run homer and three RBIs as the Giants pounded out 11 hits in front of 39,102 fans. The game lasted 2 hours, 32 minutes.
The Angels managed nine hits but could not overcome a five-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning by the Giants. Los Angeles scored single runs in the seventh and ninth innings but never seriously threatened.
San Francisco starter Robbie Ray earned the win, improving to 9-6 on the season. He allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking three. Ryan Johnson took the loss for the Angels, falling to 2-5 after permitting nine runs on nine hits in three-plus innings.
The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the third inning with the score scoreless. Luis Arraez led off with a single to right field, and Heliot Ramos followed with a single that sent Arraez to third. After Bryce Eldridge struck out, Devers lined a single to left field. Jose Siri misplayed the ball in left, allowing Arraez to score and Ramos to advance to third on the error. Casey Schmitt then grounded a single to right field, scoring Ramos and moving Devers to second. Lee capped the rally by driving a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall for his sixth home run of the season, giving the Giants a 5-0 lead.
The Giants added four more runs in the fourth inning against Johnson. Drew Gilbert led off with a single to right, and Daniel Susac was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Arraez lined a single to left, scoring Gilbert and moving Susac to second. After Ramos popped out and Eldridge struck out, Devers launched his 22nd home run of the season, a line drive to left-center field that cleared the bases and extended the lead to 9-0.
The Angels got on the board in the seventh inning. Jose Siri walked, Logan O’Hoppe singled, and Zach Neto was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Mike Trout grounded into a double play, but Siri scored on the play to make it 9-1. The Angels added another run in the ninth inning. Siri singled, O’Hoppe singled, and after a strikeout, Josh Lowe walked to load the bases. Vaughn Grissom then walked to force in Siri, cutting the deficit to 9-2. Jorge Soler grounded out to end the game.
Other key offensive contributions for the Giants included Arraez finishing 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Ramos going 1-for-5, and Schmitt driving in a run with a single. Willy Adames doubled in the second inning but was left stranded.
For the Angels, Trout had two hits and a walk, and O’Hoppe added two hits. Siri doubled and scored twice. The Angels left eight runners on base.
The Giants’ victory improved their record to 44-60, while the Angels fell to 41-64. The loss was the second in a row for Los Angeles, which dropped a 7-6 decision in the series opener Friday night. San Francisco has now won two straight after a three-game losing streak.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon. The Angels then return home for a six-game homestand against the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers, while the Giants host the Brewers before traveling to San Diego for four games.
