Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers aim for a second consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday evening at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. under clear skies and 86-degree heat.

Detroit (45-52) sends right-hander Casey Mize (4-6, 4.12 ERA) to the mound seeking his first win since June 19. The Angels (38-60) counter with left-hander Reid Detmers (6-8, 4.89 ERA), who threw six scoreless innings against the Tigers on Friday but took a hard-luck loss in a 2-1 final.

Mize has struggled to find consistency, allowing four or more earned runs in three of his last five starts. The Tigers bullpen may be called upon early against an Angels lineup looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Los Angeles dropped two of three at Minnesota to open the second half before Friday’s narrow defeat.

Players to watch

Tigers right-hander Troy Melton has been electric over his past four outings, posting a 0.78 ERA (2 earned runs in 23 1/3 innings) with 31 strikeouts. He earned the win Friday in a piggyback role, tossing 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts. Melton is expected to be available out of the bullpen again Sunday.

Angels lefty Reid Detmers rebounded from back-to-back rough starts. After allowing five earned runs in consecutive outings against Texas and Boston, Detmers limited Detroit to four hits over six scoreless frames Friday, striking out seven. He has a 2.08 ERA in two starts against the Tigers this season.

Series context

Friday’s game was a pitchers’ duel. Detroit scratched across two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by second baseman Hao-Yu Lee, his only hit of the night. Angels relievers Ryan Zeferjahn and Sam Bachman combined for two scoreless innings of relief. The series opener Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather, making Sunday a doubleheader with a split-admission twin bill.

Detroit has won three of four meetings this season after losing five of six in 2025. The Tigers sit fourth in the AL Central, 8 1/2 games out of first. The Angels are last in the AL West, 16 games back.

The line

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-2 Tigers victory. Detroit is a -1.5 run-line favorite, and the over/under is set at 8.5 runs. Detroit is 11-6 in its last 17 games; Los Angeles is 4-12 over its last 16.

Up next

Detroit travels to Chicago to face the Cubs in a three-game series starting Monday. The Angels host St. Louis for a three-game set beginning Monday.
