Angels Edge Tigers 3‑2 Behind Strong Start by Johnson
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Ryan Johnson pitched five effective innings, Vaughn Grissom and Oswald Peraza each had two hits and the Los Angeles Angels snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday evening at Angel Stadium.
The Angels won despite managing only a modest offensive output, scoring single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Detroit took an early lead on a leadoff homer in the first but could not generate sustained offense, managing only four hits all night. The Tigers fell to 46-53, while the Angels improved to 39-61.
Detroit struck first in the opening inning when Kevin McGonigle launched his ninth home run of the season to left-center field, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The momentum was short-lived as Angels starter Ryan Johnson settled in, retiring the next three batters without further damage.
Los Angeles answered in the second inning. Vaughn Grissom led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Lowe and scored on an RBI single by Oswald Peraza, tying the game 1-1. The Angels then loaded the bases on a Tyler Heineman single, but Zach Neto struck out to end the threat.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth, when the Angels manufactured the go-ahead run. Zach Neto walked and Mike Trout also walked, putting two runners on. Nolan Schanuel singled to center field to load the bases, and Jorge Soler grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Neto to score, giving Los Angeles a 2-1 lead. The Angels added an insurance run in the sixth when Peraza singled and later scored on a Neto single to right field, making it 3-1.
That run proved crucial. In the top of the ninth, Detroit attempted a comeback. Riley Greene led off with his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field, cutting the Angels’ lead to 3-2. But Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn retired the next three batters in order, striking out none but inducing popouts and a flyout to secure his third save of the season.
Johnson (2-4) earned the win, allowing two hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out five and walking three. Chase Silseth pitched a scoreless inning of relief with one hit allowed, and Sam Bachman worked a clean eighth before Zeferjahn closed the door.
Drew Anderson (3-4) took the loss for Detroit, giving up three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out five. Casey Mize worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Key performers for the Angels included Grissom, who went 2-for-4 with a double; Peraza, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI; and Neto, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Heineman added a 1-for-3 afternoon with a walk. Mike Trout went 0-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base. Jorge Soler was 0-for-4 but drove in a run on a groundout.
For the Tigers, McGonigle and Greene each homered, accounting for two of Detroit’s four hits. Hao-Yu Lee singled in the seventh and James Outman singled in the fifth. The Tigers left nine runners on base and struck out 11 times.
The game had a total of five runs, which went over the over/under line of 8.5 set by oddsmakers. Detroit had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Detroit 6, Los Angeles 2, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Detroit a 57.60% probability to win.
The Angels avoided a three-game sweep after losing the first two games of the series by scores of 7-0 and 2-1. The victory also halted a six-game home losing streak for Los Angeles, which had dropped 10 of its last 12 overall.
Detroit had won four of its previous five games entering Sunday, including a stretch of three straight victories. The Tigers will travel to Chicago to face the Cubs on Monday, while the Angels host the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series.
