Orioles top Astros 5‑2, complete sweep in Houston

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Daikin Park, powered by a strong start from Brandon Young and timely hitting from Coby Mayo.

Young worked seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out seven. He improved to 8-2 on the season, building on his July 10 win against Kansas City in which he also threw seven innings. Baltimore’s offense gave him early support, scoring two runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth before Mayo added an insurance run with a solo homer in the sixth.

Grant Wolfram earned his first save of the season, pitching a perfect ninth inning with no hits and no runs.

Houston’s only runs came on an RBI double by Yordan Alvarez in the third inning and a solo home run by Jose Altuve in the eighth. Altuve finished 2 for 4 with a homer and an RBI. Alvarez went 1 for 4 with his run batted in.

Baltimore struck first in the top of the third. Jackson Holliday walked, and Gunnar Henderson singled to left field to score Holliday. Henderson advanced to third on a single by Dylan Beavers, then crossed the plate when Pete Alonso walked and Sam Huff struck out, but the inning ended with Baltimore leading 2-0.

Houston answered in the bottom of the third. Altuve doubled to left field, and Alvarez doubled to right field to drive in Altuve, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Astros could not push across more runs, as Isaac Paredes popped out and LaMonte Wade Jr. flied out.

The Orioles extended their lead in the fifth. Taylor Ward walked, and two batters later, Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch. Sam Huff walked to load the bases, and Leody Taveras singled to left field, scoring Ward and Alonso to make it 4-1. Colton Cowser grounded out to end the frame.

Mayo’s solo home run in the sixth, his 13th of the season, gave Baltimore a 5-1 advantage.

Houston’s best chance to rally came in the eighth. Altuve led off with a solo homer to left field off Rico Garcia, pulling the Astros within 5-2. Garcia allowed a single to Paredes, who advanced to second on a throwing error by Garcia. But Garcia struck out Wade Jr. and got Yainer Diaz to ground out to end the threat.

Wolfram closed the door in the ninth, retiring Lucas Spence on a groundout, Cam Smith on a popout, and Zach Dezenzo on a groundout.

Hunter Brown took the loss for Houston, allowing three hits and four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. He fell to 1-1 on the year. Kai-Wei Teng threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three. Cristian Javier and Bryan King also saw action out of the bullpen.
