Durbin’s homer lifts Red Sox past White Sox 2‑1

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Caleb Durbin’s two-run home run in the fourth inning lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, completing a three-game sweep.

Boston starter Patrick Sandoval worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five, but did not factor in the decision. Tyron Guerrero, who entered in relief in the fifth, earned his first win of the season after recording two outs without allowing a run. Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten each pitched a scoreless inning, and Aroldis Chapman notched his 19th save with a perfect ninth.

Chicago’s Anthony Kay took the loss, dropping to 6-4. He allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, walking two and striking out six.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. Romy Gonzalez drew a one-out walk, and Durbin followed by driving a 1-1 pitch from Kay over the left-field wall for his ninth home run of the season, giving Boston a 2-0 lead.

Chicago answered in the bottom of the fifth. Luisangel Acuña led off with a single and advanced to third after consecutive outs. Chase Meidroth walked, and Andrew Benintendi greeted Sandoval with a soft ground-ball single that scored Acuña, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The White Sox then loaded the bases but could not push across the tying run.

Boston’s offense managed only four hits on the day. Connor Wong and Wilyer Abreu each singled, and Durbin’s homer accounted for the team’s only extra-base hit. The Red Sox struck out nine times and left five runners on base.

Chicago outhit Boston 7-4 and had two runners in scoring position after the fifth but could not convert. Colson Montgomery, Braden Montgomery and Tristan Peters each collected two hits for the White Sox, who stranded eight baserunners.

The White Sox threatened in the sixth when Tristan Peters singled with one out, but he was erased on a forceout. Chapman worked a perfect ninth, striking out one and retiring the side on 12 pitches.

The sweep extended Boston’s winning streak to three games, improving the Red Sox to 43-48. Chicago fell to 47-45, having lost three straight and four of its last five.

Boston opens a three-game series at the New York Mets on Friday, while Chicago returns home to host the Athletics in a weekend set.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston 7, Chicago 5, and its ELO system gave the Red Sox a 54.00 percent probability of victory. Boston was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of three runs went over the over-under line of nine.
