Toronto Blue Jays at San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants host the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday at Oracle Park in the opener of a two-game interleague series between two clubs jockeying for position near the bottom of their respective divisions.

Both teams are looking to snap out of prolonged slumps. The Giants (37-52) have lost eight of their last 10 games, while the Blue Jays (42-48) have dropped five of six. An Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 victory for San Francisco.

Right-hander Trey Yesavage (4-4, 3.82 ERA) will start for Toronto. Yesavage has been a stabilizing presence in the rotation of late, posting a 2.57 ERA over his last three starts spanning 18 1/3 innings. He has recorded 15 strikeouts in that stretch against just four walks. His most recent outing was a hard-luck 4-0 loss at Seattle on Sunday, where he allowed two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven. Yesavage has been especially stingy with hits, surrendering three or fewer in each of his last four starts.

San Francisco will counter with a lineup featuring center fielder Drew Gilbert, who is coming off a historic individual performance in Sunday’s 7-6 loss at Colorado. Gilbert went 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, raising his batting average to .245. Prior to that game, however, Gilbert had been mired in a deep slump, going 1 for his previous 14 with no extra-base hits across seven games. The 25-year-old has shown flashes of power but has struggled to find consistency, batting just .188 over his last 15 games entering Sunday.

Tuesday’s game is the first meeting of the season between the clubs. Monday’s series opener was postponed due to inclement weather in the Bay Area and will be made up as part of a split doubleheader Wednesday.

Toronto continues a seven-game road trip after dropping three of four at Seattle. The Blue Jays return home Friday to begin a six-game homestand against the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.

San Francisco opens a nine-game homestand that continues with four games against Colorado after the Toronto series concludes. The Giants then head to Seattle and Kansas City.
