Twins top Guardians 3‑1 behind Bradley’s dominant outing
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (Interstat) — Taj Bradley struck out 10 over seven innings and Kody Clemens delivered a go-ahead triple in the seventh inning as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Tuesday night at Target Field.
The win moved Minnesota to 45-47 on the season, while Cleveland fell to 47-45. The game lasted 2 hours, 23 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 17,813.
Bradley, now 8-3, allowed only three hits and one earned run while walking none. He retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced after surrendering a solo home run in the second inning. Yoendrys Gómez worked the final one-third of an inning for his 10th save, striking out one.
The Guardians took an early lead in the top of the second when Rhys Hoskins drove a 1-1 pitch from Bradley over the center-field wall for his eighth homer of the season. The solo shot gave Cleveland a 1-0 advantage.
Minnesota answered immediately in the bottom half. Kody Clemens reached on a fielding error by second baseman Travis Bazzana, then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Kreidler. Luke Keaschall singled to load the bases with one out. After Kyler Fedko struck out, Austin Martin lifted a sacrifice fly to left fielder Steven Kwan, scoring Clemens to tie the game. Brooks Lee followed with a ground-ball single to center that scored Kreidler, giving the Twins a 2-1 lead. Josh Bell walked to reload the bases, but Royce Lewis popped out to shortstop to end the inning.
Bradley settled in after the two-run frame. He retired the Guardians in order in the third and fourth, then worked around a leadoff double by Chase DeLauter in the seventh. DeLauter moved to third on a groundout, but Bradley struck out Hoskins and got Brayan Rocchio to ground out to first base.
Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo matched Bradley for much of the night, but the Twins broke the tie in the seventh. Bell led off with a single to center. Lewis struck out, and Victor Caratini lined out to right. Clemens then stepped to the plate with two outs and launched a sharp line drive to left field that glanced off Kwan’s glove and rolled to the wall. Clemens raced to third for his third triple of the season, scoring Bell to extend Minnesota’s lead to 3-1. Kreidler popped out to end the inning.
Cantillo, now 7-4, allowed three runs — two earned — on eight hits over six-plus innings. He struck out five and walked two. Erik Sabrowski and Matt Festa completed the game for Cleveland.
The Guardians had only three hits in the game. Hoskins’ homer was Cleveland’s only extra-base hit. DeLauter had a double in the seventh and a single in the fourth. Kwan, Bazzana, Kyle Manzardo, Rocchio, Daniel Schneemann, Patrick Bailey, David Fry and Gabriel Arias combined to go 0 for 24. Arias struck out swinging with DeLauter on first base to end the game.
For the Twins, Bell finished 2 for 3 with a walk and a run. Clemens was 2 for 4 with the triple and two runs batted in. Lee drove in a run and Martin had a sacrifice fly. Kreidler doubled in the third and Keaschall singled twice. Caratini singled, and Martin also singled in the eighth.
Cleveland had won three of four against the Chicago White Sox entering the series and had taken two of three from Minnesota in their previous head-to-head set in May. The Twins came in having won two straight against the New York Yankees and three of their last four overall.
The series continues Wednesday and Thursday at Target Field before both teams travel for weekend series. Cleveland visits Miami, while Minnesota hosts the Los Angeles Angels.
Tuesday’s result marked the fifth time in the last six games between the two clubs that the home team has emerged victorious.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Minnesota 6, Cleveland 5. Interstat’s ELO system had given Cleveland a 53.00 percent probability to win. Minnesota had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of four runs went under the over/under line of 8.5.
