Brewers’ Three-Run Seventh Tops Diamondbacks 3‑2

PHOENIX (Interstat) — Drew Rom earned his first major league win and Trevor Megill recorded his 13th save as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Sunday evening at Chase Field.

The Brewers improved to 55-33, while the Diamondbacks fell to 44-45 in the finale of a three-game series that saw Milwaukee take two of three. The game lasted 2 hours, 52 minutes before a crowd of 24,728.

All the scoring came in the seventh inning, when Milwaukee erupted for three runs and Arizona answered with one. That was the only inning either team managed to push across a run after Arizona had scored once in the first.

Milwaukee starter Brandon Sproat worked the first five innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Rom entered in the sixth and pitched a perfect frame, striking out one, before Aaron Ashby and Abner Uribe combined to hold the Diamondbacks to a run in the seventh. Megill pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out one and walking one.

Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez turned in a strong outing, allowing two earned runs on five hits over six innings with three strikeouts and no walks. He left with the game tied 1-1 but was pinned with the loss after the Brewers got to the bullpen in the seventh.

The Diamondbacks struck first in the bottom of the first. With one out, Geraldo Perdomo doubled to center field. Corbin Carroll followed with a double to right, scoring Perdomo to make it 1-0. A walk to Gabriel Moreno and a groundout advanced Carroll to third, but the rally ended when Ildemaro Vargas grounded out.

Neither team threatened again until the seventh. Milwaukee opened the top half with a single by Andrew Vaughn. Jake Bauers then launched a two-run homer to right-center field, also scoring Sal Frelick, who had entered the game earlier as a pinch runner. The homer, Bauers’ 16th of the season, gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead. After a strikeout, Gary Sanchez doubled and later scored on a single by Joey Ortiz, making it 3-1.

Arizona answered in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Troy singled off Ashby, went to third on a single by Perdomo, and scored on a forceout by Moreno, cutting the margin to 3-2. But Max Kepler struck out to end the inning.

The Diamondbacks put a runner on in the eighth when Vargas walked, but Tim Tawa sacrificed him to second and Pavin Smith lined into a double play. In the ninth, Ketel Marte walked with one out, but Perdomo popped out and Carroll flied out to end the game.

Perdomo led all hitters with three hits in five at-bats, including a double. Tommy Troy had one hit in four at-bats and Carroll drove in the Diamondbacks’ first run with his 18th double. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went hitless in two at-bats with a walk.

For Milwaukee, Bauers drove in two runs with his homer, and Ortiz drove in one. Garrett Mitchell went hitless in four at-bats with two strikeouts, while Brice Turang singled in the first. Jackson Chourio doubled in the sixth.

Rodriguez allowed only one hit through the first five innings, a single by Turang in the first. He retired eight straight batters at one point and did not issue a walk. Drey Jameson pitched a perfect eighth inning for Arizona, and Kevin Ginkel allowed one run on two hits in the ninth.

The win was the Brewers’ third in their last four games and kept them atop the National League Central. The Diamondbacks lost for the sixth time in their last eight games and dropped a game below .500 at home.

The series had opened Friday with Milwaukee winning 7-4 in 11 innings before Arizona evened the series with a 4-3 victory Saturday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Milwaukee 6, Arizona 4, with the Brewers holding a 60.50 percent probability of winning according to Interstat’s ELO system. Milwaukee was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over-under line of 9.
