Marlins edge Giants 2‑1 behind Stowers, Lopez

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — Ryan Gusto pitched 4⅓ innings of three-hit ball and the Miami Marlins bullpen combined for 4⅔ scoreless innings Sunday as the Marlins defeated the San Francisco Giants 2-1 at loanDepot Park to complete a three-game sweep.

Kyle Stowers hit a solo home run and Otto Lopez drove in the go-ahead run with a fourth-inning double as Miami overcame an early deficit and held on for its fourth straight win. The Marlins improved to 40-38, while the Giants fell to 31-47.

Giants starter Logan Webb turned in a strong outing, allowing two runs on five hits over eight innings with five strikeouts, but the offense managed only four hits and stranded six baserunners.

Miami opened the scoring in the second inning. Stowers led off the bottom of the frame and crushed a 1-0 pitch from Webb over the center-field fence for his eighth home run of the season, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

San Francisco answered in the third. Luis Arraez doubled to left field with one out and Bryce Eldridge walked to put runners on first and second. Casey Schmitt lined a single to right field, scoring Arraez and sending Eldridge to third. Starter John King entered in relief of Gusto and escaped the jam by getting Rafael Devers to line out sharply to center, keeping the score tied 1-1.

The Marlins regained the lead in the fourth. With one out, Stowers drew a walk. Lopez followed with a double to center field, scoring Stowers from first to make it 2-1.

The Giants threatened again in the fifth when Drew Gilbert singled with one out, but King induced a forceout and the inning ended. San Francisco’s best chance came in the sixth when Schmitt singled to lead off, but he was stranded as the next three batters flied out.

Calvin Faucher, Michael Petersen and Lake Bachar combined to shut down the Giants over the final three innings. Bachar earned his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

King, the winning pitcher, worked 1⅓ innings of one-hit relief and improved to 4-1. Webb took the loss, falling to 4-5, despite allowing only five hits and striking out five over eight innings.

Miami’s bullpen, which entered the day with a 3.72 ERA, held San Francisco scoreless over the final 4⅔ innings. Gusto struck out six and allowed one earned run in his 4⅓-inning start, rebounding from a poor outing at Philadelphia on June 15 in which he allowed five earned runs in 4⅔ innings.

The Marlins took advantage of timely hitting and solid relief work. Stowers went 1 for 2 with a home run and a walk. Lopez was 1 for 3 with an RBI double. Schmitt led the Giants with a 2-for-4 performance and drove in the only run. Arraez added a double and a single in four at-bats.

Defensive plays limited opportunities for both teams. In the third, with the score tied and a runner on first, Giants shortstop Willy Adames turned a groundout to end the inning. In the fifth, Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez started a forceout that erased a leadoff single.

The game took place on a Sunday afternoon with an announced attendance of 18,749 and lasted 2 hours, 14 minutes.

San Francisco’s series loss extended its struggles on the road. The Giants dropped to 12-27 away from home this season. The Marlins improved to 21-18 at loanDepot Park.

Miami now heads into a four-game homestand against the Texas Rangers beginning Monday. The Giants travel to San Francisco to host the Athletics in a three-game series starting Tuesday.

The sweep completed a dominant weekend for the Marlins, who outscored the Giants 12-7 in the three games. Miami’s bullpen allowed only one run over the final 14⅓ innings of the series.

Webb’s performance was the latest strong start for the Giants right-hander, who has a 3.18 ERA over his last six outings. He threw 97 pitches, 66 for strikes, and did not issue a walk.

Gusto’s start was his second consecutive quality outing following a win against Arizona on June 10. He mixed a four-seam fastball that averaged 93 mph with a slider that generated seven swings and misses.

The Giants mounted a final threat in the ninth. Devers led off with a walk, but pinch-runner Jonah Cox was erased on a double play started by third baseman Javier Sanoja. Willy Adames grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami Marlins 6, San Francisco Giants 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Miami with a 55.00 percent probability to win. San Francisco had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 3 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
