Dodgers rally past Orioles on walk-off single in ninth

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Mookie Betts homered to lead off the ninth inning and Dalton Rushing delivered a two-run single with a throwing error that completed a three-run rally as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth before staging a comeback that snapped Baltimore’s two-game winning streak. Betts, who finished three for five with a double and a home run, launched his eighth homer of the season to left field on the first pitch from Orioles reliever Ryan Helsley. Helsley, who took the loss and fell to 0-3, then walked Max Muncy. Tommy Edman popped out in foul territory for the second out, but Ryan Ward walked to put two runners on. Rushing then lined a single to right field off Helsley that scored both pinch-runner Alex Call and Ward. Right fielder Tyler O’Neill’s throwing error allowed Rushing to advance and sealed the victory.

The win improved the Dodgers to 49-27 and kept them atop the National League West. Baltimore dropped to 35-42.

Roki Sasaki turned in a strong start for Los Angeles, working five and two-thirds innings and allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out six. Sasaki, who had struggled in his previous outing June 12 at Chicago when he surrendered seven earned runs in four and one-third innings, rebounded to keep the Orioles in check through the middle innings. He departed after Gunnar Henderson and Pete Alonso hit back-to-back homers in the sixth that gave Baltimore a 5-3 lead.

Blake Treinen earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning, his fourth victory against one loss. Treinen struck out two in one inning of work, retiring the side in order.

Trey Gibson started for Baltimore and pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with eight strikeouts. He left with the game tied 3-3 after the Dodgers had taken an early lead.

Los Angeles scored two runs in the first inning. Kyle Tucker walked and scored on a double by Betts, and Max Muncy followed with a sharp single to right that scored Betts. The Dodgers added a run in the second when Alex Freeland singled, moved to second on a strikeout, and scored on Andy Pages’ ground-rule double to left, making it 3-0.

Baltimore did not score until the sixth. Jackson Holliday singled and Henderson homered to right field, his 16th of the season, scoring Holliday. Alonso then hit his 17th homer to left-center field, tying the game 3-3 and knocking Sasaki out of the game.

The Orioles took the lead in the seventh. Colton Cowser singled, Coby Mayo singled, Holliday walked, and Jeremiah Jackson singled to right, driving in two runs and putting Baltimore ahead 5-3. But the Dodgers bullpen held firm from there. Kyle Hurt pitched a scoreless seventh, Treinen worked the eighth, and the Dodgers offense capitalized in the ninth.

Baltimore’s bullpen contributed strong work before the ninth. Tyler Wells threw one and two-thirds scoreless innings with three strikeouts, Andrew Kittredge pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout, and Yennier Cano recorded one out in the sixth. Helsley had not allowed a run in his previous three appearances before Friday.

The Dodgers finished with 12 hits, while Baltimore managed seven. Betts led all hitters with three hits, including his double and homer. Henderson and Alonso each homered for Baltimore. The Orioles had won the previous two games of their road trip but dropped the opener of this three-game series.

The total combined score of 11 went under the over-under line of 9.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 6, Baltimore Orioles 3, and its ELO system gave the Dodgers a 69.50 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5.
