Braves edge Brewers 3‑2 behind Pérez’s strong start

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Martín Pérez pitched six innings of one-run ball, Mike Yastrzemski hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning and the Atlanta Braves defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Friday night at Truist Park in front of 40,107 fans.

The game lasted 2 hours, 29 minutes.

Pérez, who improved to 6-3, allowed six hits and struck out five while walking one. He left with the score tied 2-2 after the top of the seventh, then Yastrzemski led off the bottom half against Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe with his fourth home run of the season, a fly ball to right field that broke the deadlock.

Raisel Iglesias earned his 15th save with a shaky ninth inning. He surrendered two hits and one run, striking out one, but got William Contreras to strike out swinging with a runner on third to end the game.

Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski, who fell to 8-3, matched Pérez for six innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs, striking out seven and walking one. Neither starter factored in the decision after the Braves tied the game in the sixth.

The Brewers struck first in the third inning. Blake Perkins led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and after a single by Joey Ortiz put runners at first and second, Christian Yelich’s groundout advanced both runners. Pérez then intentionally walked Jackson Chourio to load the bases for Brice Turang, who singled to center field to score Perkins. The inning ended with the bases still loaded when Contreras flied out to right.

Milwaukee’s only other run came in the ninth against Iglesias. Yelich walked, Chourio doubled to left putting runners at second and third, and Turang singled to left to score Yelich. Chourio was thrown out at the plate on the play following a Brewers challenge that was upheld. Contreras then struck out to end the game.

Atlanta’s offense was held off the board until the sixth. Jorge Mateo led off with a single, and after a strikeout, Ozzie Albies singled to put runners at first and third. Matt Olson walked to load the bases, and Dominic Smith struck out for the second out. Mauricio Dubón then lined a single to left field that scored Mateo and Albies, tying the game at 2.

The Braves added the decisive run in the seventh when Yastrzemski connected off Uribe. Uribe allowed one hit and one earned run with two strikeouts in his inning of work. Craig Yoho pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Milwaukee, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Atlanta’s bullpen held the Brewers at bay after Pérez departed. Robert Suarez pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Dylan Lee recorded two outs in the ninth, striking out one, before Iglesias entered.

Milwaukee outhit Atlanta 11-7 but went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Turang drove in both Brewers runs on a 2-for-5 night. Dubón had two RBIs for Atlanta on a 1-for-4 performance. Yastrzemski was 1 for 3 with the home run.

The Brewers fell to 45-28, while the Braves improved to 47-27.

Milwaukee entered the series having won four of its previous six games, including three of four at home against the Cleveland Guardians earlier in the week. Atlanta had lost two straight at home to the San Francisco Giants before Friday’s victory.

The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Braves trailing 1-0. After Mateo’s leadoff single and Albies’ one-out single, Misiorowski walked Olson to load the bases. He got Smith to strike out on a foul tip for the second out, bringing Dubón to the plate. Dubón lined a two-run single to left, tying the score and flipping the momentum. Misiorowski then struck out Austin Riley to end the inning, but the damage was done. The Braves had erased Milwaukee’s early lead and set the stage for Yastrzemski’s homer an inning later.

The series continues Saturday at 7:15 p.m. EDT and Sunday at 1:35 p.m. EDT before the Brewers travel to Cincinnati for a three-game set beginning Monday. The Braves head to San Diego for a three-game series that starts Monday.
