ATHLETICS HOMER THREE TIMES, EDGE BREWERS 7‑5
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Athletics erased an early deficit with a five-run outburst across the fifth and sixth innings Tuesday night, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 at Sutter Health Park.
Tyler Soderstrom and Jonah Heim each homered during a three-run fifth that put the Athletics ahead for good, and Zack Gelof added a solo shot in the sixth to give the home team enough cushion. J.T. Ginn pitched 5⅔ innings to earn his fourth win, and Mason Barnett recorded his first save with two scoreless innings of relief.
Milwaukee, which entered the day with the best record in the National League at 41-23, struck first with two runs in the opening inning. Christian Yelich singled and Jackson Chourio followed with a line-drive home run to right field, his fifth of the season. The Brewers threatened for more but left two runners on when Sal Frelick flied out.
The Athletics responded in the bottom half. Nick Kurtz led off with his 15th homer, a fly ball to right-center, cutting the Milwaukee lead in half. The Brewers starter Robert Gasser, still seeking his first win of the season after three starts, retired the next two batters but walked Soderstrom before Max Muncy struck out to end the inning.
Milwaukee starter Robert Gasser, still seeking his first win, escaped the first inning but ran into trouble in the second. Jonah Heim led off with a single, and Henry Bolte, playing center field, crushed his first home run of the season to right-center, putting the Athletics ahead 3-2. Bolte’s two-run blast scored Heim and gave the Athletics their first lead.
Neither team scored in the third inning. Milwaukee stranded Garrett Mitchell at second base after a double in the fourth, but manufactured a run nonetheless. Mitchell led off with a double, moved to third on a Sal Frelick single, and scored on a Luis Rengifo pop single that fell in shallow right field. The rally stalled when David Hamilton grounded into a fielder’s choice and Christian Yelich grounded out, but the Brewers tied the game 3-3.
The Athletics broke the tie decisively in the fifth. Shea Langeliers singled sharply to left to open the frame. Soderstrom then launched his 11th homer of the season to right-center, scoring Langeliers and restoring the Athletics’ lead at 5-3. After Max Muncy popped out, Heim drilled his fifth homer of the year to center field, making it 6-3.
The Brewers refused to fold. In the sixth, they loaded the bases with no outs after a walk and two singles. Sal Frelick grounded into a forceout to score Jake Bauers, cutting the deficit to 6-4. A Luis Rengifo groundout moved Garrett Mitchell to third, and Christian Yelich delivered a sharp single to center. Mitchell scored, and a fielding error by Henry Bolte allowed Yelich to take second while David Hamilton advanced to third. But Jackson Chourio struck out swinging, leaving the Brewers trailing 6-5.
The Athletics answered immediately. Zack Gelof led off the bottom of the sixth with his eighth homer of the season, a solo shot to center field, extending the lead to 7-5. Gasser exited after that, charged with all seven runs, eight hits and five earned runs while striking out five over 5⅔ innings. He dropped to 0-3.
Milwaukee’s bullpen held the Athletics scoreless over the final three innings, but the Brewers offense could not solve Barnett. The right-hander entered in the eighth and struck out the side in order, fanning Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick and Andrew Vaughn. He then retired the side in the ninth, striking out two more, to finish with four strikeouts over two perfect innings.
Barnett’s save sealed the victory for Ginn, who battled through six innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out five. Ginn improved to 4-3.
The Brewers got two hits apiece from Yelich and Mitchell. Garrett Mitchell doubled twice, giving him 14 two-base hits on the season. For the Athletics, Heim collected three hits, including his solo homer, and drove in one run. Soderstrom finished 1 for 3 with a walk and the game-tying homer.
The attendance was listed at 8,422, and the game lasted 2 hours, 34 minutes.
Milwaukee fell to 41-24, while the Athletics improved to 32-35. The two teams will conclude their two-game series Wednesday evening. The Brewers return home Friday to host the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game set, while the Athletics welcome the Colorado Rockies for a three-game weekend series.
The game came one night after the two clubs played a marathon 12-inning contest that Milwaukee won 15-14. That game featured 29 runs and 33 hits, a stark contrast to Tuesday’s more tightly contested affair.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the fifth when Soderstrom turned on a pitch and sent it over the right-center-field wall. Heim followed with an opposite-field homer to center, and the Athletics never trailed again. Gelof’s solo blast in the sixth, his eighth of the year, provided the final margin.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Milwaukee Brewers 7, Athletics 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 63.20 percent probability to win. The Brewers had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of 12 runs went over the over-under line of 12.5.
