Chicago Cubs at Colorado Rockies

DENVER (Interstat) — The Chicago Cubs, looking to snap a two-game skid, open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at 6:40 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Coors Field.

The Cubs (34-32) are coming off a 2-1, 10-inning loss Sunday to the San Francisco Giants. They are expected to send right-hander Colin Rea (5-3) to the mound, though right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4) has also been listed as probable. Rea pitched in relief Saturday, allowing two runs in one inning.

Colorado (24-42) has lost four of its last five after a 12-4 defeat Sunday to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Rockies will start left-hander Kyle Freeland (1-8), who has struggled mightily, with a 9.00 ERA over his last five starts. He allowed three earned runs in five innings Sunday.

One player to watch for the Cubs is right-hander Javier Assad, who delivered a strong relief outing Sunday: 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. He also earned a win in a spot start May 15 against the Chicago White Sox.

For Colorado, catcher Hunter Goodman homered and drove in two runs in Sunday’s loss. Right fielder Troy Johnston also drove in a run.

The Cubs’ offense has been inconsistent. They took two of three from the Giants but scored just four total runs in the two losses. The Rockies’ pitching staff has surrendered 12 or more runs in three of their last four games.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Chicago victory.

Following Tuesday’s matchup, the teams play again Wednesday and Thursday before the Cubs head to San Francisco and the Rockies travel to Oakland.
