Hunter Goodman, Edouard Julien Lead Rockies Past Cubs 7‑3
DENVER (Interstat) — The Colorado Rockies rode a four-run second inning and a two-run third to a 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night at Coors Field, snapping a four-game losing streak and improving to 25-42.
Tomoyuki Sugano earned his sixth win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings while striking out two and walking three. The right-hander surrendered a two-run homer to Michael Busch in the sixth but otherwise kept the Cubs’ offense in check. Colin Rea took the loss for Chicago, falling to 5-4 after allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4⅓ innings.
The Rockies struck first in the bottom of the first. After Jake McCarthy walked and TJ Rumfield was hit by a pitch, Hunter Goodman launched his 18th home run of the season to right-center field, giving Colorado a 2-0 lead. The Cubs answered with a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Alex Bregman, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
But Colorado broke the game open in the bottom of the second. Ezequiel Tovar led off with his fifth homer of the year to left-center, tying the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Kyle Karros singled, and Edouard Julien followed with a double to left-center that scored Karros for a 3-2 lead. Jake McCarthy then singled sharply to center, bringing home Julien and making it 4-2. The Rockies added two more in the third. Goodman walked, Troy Johnston doubled, and after a pair of strikeouts, Julien singled to center, plating Goodman and Johnston to stretch the lead to 6-2. McCarthy grounded out to end the inning with the score 7-2.
The Cubs mounted a response in the sixth. Busch led off with a solo homer to right-center, his seventh of the season. Bregman then singled and Ian Happ walked, and Seiya Suzuki grounded out to second, scoring Bregman to make it 7-3. But Sugano retired the next two batters, and the Rockies bullpen held Chicago scoreless over the final three innings.
Cubs relievers Hoby Milner and Ethan Roberts each tossed a scoreless inning, with Milner striking out one. Bregman finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Busch went 1 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs. For the Rockies, Julien had two hits and three RBIs, while Goodman drove in three runs on his homer. Tovar and McCarthy each added two hits.
The Cubs, now 34-33, had won two of their previous three games, including a 3-2 extra-inning victory over San Francisco on Saturday. They will continue their road trip against these same Rockies on Wednesday and Thursday before heading to San Francisco. The Rockies, who lost 12-4 to Milwaukee on Sunday, will next host the Cubs for two more games then travel to Oakland.
Attendance was 29,302, and the game lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes.
A pregame projection by Interstat’s game simulator had favored the Cubs 5-4, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Chicago a 69.40 percent chance to win. The Cubs were installed as -1.5 favorites on the spread, but the total score of 10 went over the over-under line of 12.5.
