Yankees edge Guardians 3‑2 on Jones’ homer
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. crushed a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, sending the New York Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
Chisholm’s blast to right field, his ninth of the season and the lone run of the inning, proved decisive in a taut pitchers’ duel that saw the Yankees even their four-game series at one win apiece. The Guardians had pulled even in the third inning after falling behind 2-0 on Spencer Jones’ two-run homer in the second, but they could not solve the Yankees’ bullpen over the final four frames.
Fernando Cruz recorded the final four outs for his first save of the season, striking out three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth. Camilo Doval earned the victory with a scoreless eighth inning, improving to 2-0. Tim Herrin took the loss after allowing Chisholm’s homer, falling to 0-2.
Attendance was announced at 27,154, and the game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes.
Gerrit Cole started for the Yankees and worked five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Slade Cecconi countered for Cleveland with five effective innings of his own, yielding six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts.
The Yankees struck first in the second inning. Chisholm drew a one-out walk against Cecconi, and Jones followed by launching a fly ball to center field that cleared the wall for a two-run homer. Jones’ first major league home run gave New York a 2-0 lead, and Cecconi retired the next two hitters to limit the damage.
Cleveland answered in the third. Jose Ramirez singled to center with one out, and Chase DeLauter followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Kyle Manzardo walked, Rhys Hoskins was hit by a pitch, and Angel Martinez singled to bring home DeLauter, tying the score at 2-2. Cole escaped further trouble when Steven Kwan grounded out to first.
Both starting pitchers settled in after that. Cecconi retired seven of eight hitters during one stretch, and Cole worked around a leadoff single in the fifth and a two-out walk in the fourth before handing the ball to Paul Blackburn in the sixth. Blackburn pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The Guardians put a runner at third with one out in the fifth on Manzardo’s single and a Martinez single, but Kyle Manzardo was thrown out at the plate on Kwan’s fielder’s choice. Austin Hedges followed with a flyout to right to end the threat.
New York’s offense went quiet after the second inning until Chisholm’s decisive at-bat in the eighth. Facing Herrin, who had entered to start the inning, Chisholm worked a 1-0 count and then drove a fastball over the right-field wall. Herrin allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.
The Yankees had a chance to add on in the eighth after Chisholm’s homer, but Ryan McMahon’s single was followed by a groundout from J.C. Escarra to end the inning. Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt were retired in order in the ninth.
Cleveland mounted a threat in the bottom of the eighth against Jake Bird. Daniel Schneemann, who entered as a pinch hitter, singled with one out. Brayan Rocchio walked to put runners at first and second, but Bird rebounded to strike out Travis Bazzana and retire Ramirez on a lineout to center.
Cruz entered in the ninth and struck out Kyle Manzardo swinging to begin the frame. He then struck out Hoskins and Martinez swinging, the latter ending the game, as the Yankees’ bullpen combined to close out the victory.
For the Yankees, Paul Goldschmidt had two hits, including a single in the first and another in the third. Ryan McMahon singled twice. Jones finished 1 for 4 with the home run and two RBIs. Chisholm walked and homered, scoring twice.
The Guardians got two hits from Manzardo, who singled in the seventh and also singled in the fifth. Martinez had two singles and an RBI. DeLauter drove in a run with a single. Austin Hedges singled in the fourth.
Colin Holderman pitched a perfect seventh inning for Cleveland, striking out one. Matt Festa retired two of three hitters in the sixth, allowing one hit.
The Yankees improved to 40-26, while the Guardians fell to 37-32. The teams have traded wins in their last four meetings dating to earlier this month, with New York’s 7-5 victory in 10 innings Monday followed by Cleveland’s 5-4 and 9-4 wins at Yankee Stadium last week. The series concludes Wednesday before each club embarks on a road trip.
New York travels to Toronto for a weekend set starting Friday, while Cleveland hosts Detroit beginning Friday at Progressive Field.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-5 final score in favor of the Yankees. Interstat’s ELO system gave New York a 54.40 percent probability of winning. The Yankees entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over/under line of 8.
